America’s Top Giver: Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg Gave Away How Much Last Year?

Mark Zuckerberg Discusses The Internet, Immigration, During Interview

And the award for most generous American philanthropist for 2013 goes to – Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. Why not, he has a few bucks to spare.

According to reports, Zuckerberg donated 18 million shares of Facebook stock valued at about $970 million to a Silicon Valley non-profit in December. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that that was the largest charitable gift of the year and put the couple on top of the list of 50 most charitable Americans. That list of 50 most charitable donated and/or pledged over $10 billion last year. Incredible.

Phil Knight, founder of Nike, was third on the list after making a $500 million challenge grant to Oregon Health and Science University Foundation for cancer research.

We’re not taking anything away from Zuckerberg, but a donation of stock to a Silicon Valley non-profit doesn’t sound as good as it could have. Either way, kudos to Zuckerberg for making an effort for others – lets just hope that non-profit was a quality cause.
