It appears that Andrew Garfield is going to be a New Yorker for a while. At least until the year 2018. It’s been confirmed by Sony that Garfield has signed on for two more sequels. This coming before the first sequel is even released. The first sequel, set for release in May 2014, also features Martin Sheen and Sally Field, and pits Garfield’s Spiderman against two villains. Paul Giamatti plays The Rhino, while Jamie Foxx plays the evil Electro.
The two more sequels are set for release in June 2016 and May 2018. A statement from Jeff Blake, Sony’s chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution, reads: “Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise.” For those who are counting the numbers, the first Spiderman cost $230MM to make and brought in $262MM in its release last summer.
Hopefully during this time Garfield and onscreen/offscreen girlfriend Emma Stone can keep it together. Four years is a pretty big commitment and an awful long relationship in Hollywood. Otherwise things could get a little testy on set. But apparently the couple is doing very well right now.
