Becoming a father – or a mother – for the first time (or second or third) is an experience that words cannot describe, but becoming the parent of a premature baby whose first days are spent hooked up to tubes and machines is an experience so amazing and so terrifying all wrapped up into one that it’s impossible to understand. Chris Pratt, actor and husband to famous actress Anna Faris, recently spoke out about the couple’s first child, their son Jack, who turns two in August. The baby was born 9 weeks early and spent the first month of his life in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit).

“We were scared for a long time. We prayed a lot. It restored my faith in God, not that it needed to be restored, but it really redefined it. The baby was so beautiful to us, and I look back at the photos of him and it must have been jarring for other people to come in and see him, but to us he was so beautiful and perfect,” Pratt says of his son’s first weeks of life, “He is such a fighter, he’s amazing.”

Pratt is obviously a proud dad, continuing his interview by speaking more about his premature son, telling interviewers how sweet, charming and completely in love he is with little Jack. Having a child in the NICU is not an easy feat. It’s terrifying and scary, and it’s the longest days of your life (trust me, my husband and I have 4-month-old twins who were in the NICU for a week). Fortunately for Pratt and Faris, their son is now happy and healthy.

Faris also took a moment to speak out about her husband after hearing him talk about their son, “He’s a really loving father, he is an incredible husband.”
