Craig Ferguson Discusses Leaving Late Night

Craig Ferguson is one of the funniest men in late night, but he didn’t necessarily want to be a late night television host most of his life. In fact, he never wanted to be the man who replaced David Letterman. The comedian is going to say goodbye to his day (night?) job in December, and it’s something that he actually did expect, unlike getting the job as a late night host. The host of The Late Late Show recently said he never thought he’d have that job as long as he did, and he certainly never had any hope he’d be David Letterman’s replacement.

“I didn’t want it. I know it is very hard to get people to believe it. It was never my inclination. I never wanted to be a late night host. I did it because it was fun, entertaining and engaging,” he said of his career in late night and his feelings about Letterman’s job. He might be leaving the late show, but he’s not leaving television all together. The comedian began his new job last week, hosting a show called Celebrity Name Game, which is a game show designed to work like the game Identity Crisis.

“I don’t really make plans. The show is very organic. I’ll have people that I would like to make sure to fit in. But I’m not retiring. I’ll probably talk to them again in some form. Doing something very big and grand at the end doesn’t really seem to be in the spirit of the show,” he said when asked if he has any big plans for his final few shows in December. It seems he’s just happy to say goodbye to this gig and move onto his next. Of course, he still as a few months to talk to different celebs and make jokes for the rest of the world.
