Five Reasons We Can’t Stand Anthony Bourdain

DC Central Kitchen's Capital Food Fight

Over the course of his career, Anthony Bourdain has gained a great deal of fame for his work as both a chef and an author.  In 2000, Bourdain’s book, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, became a New York Times best seller, and he immediately began a fan favorite.  Since then, he has traveled the world trying cuisine from different cultures, and sharing his experiences. However, despite his fame and his talent, Bourdain has ruffled a lot of feathers with his somewhat obnoxious personality.  Never afraid to speak his mind, he has offended a great deal of people along the way – and shown very little remorse.  Here are five reasons we can’t stand Anthony Bourdain.

1. He’s hates foodies, even if they’re kids.

Everybody knows Anthony Bourdain isn’t the nicest guy around, but he really crossed the line when he lashed out at a bunch of kids.  During a TV appearance, Bourdain stated: “Foodies are annoying enough, do we really need child foodies?”

2. He’s made rude remarks about people who watch The Food Network.

Although Anthony Bourdain has had shows on The Food Network, he seems to think very little of the people who actually watch the channel.  According to Bourdain: “The people who watch the Food Network are the ones with a gallon of soda and a bag of Cheetos going, ‘oh, I could make that.’”

3. He’s not a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow.

There’s nothing wrong with not being a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow, but Bourdain crossed the line when he spoke openly about her and referred to her by a derogatory name. Bourdain stated: ““Why would you go to Spain with the one [insert inappropriate word here] who refuses to eat ham?” Sure, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but this was just a little unnecessary.

4. He has something negative to say about almost everyone and everything.

Almost every time Anthony Bourdain opens his mouth, something rude flies out.  Although he has received a lot of criticism for his remarks, and lost a lot of support from former fans, Bourdain always seems to be unapologetic. Bourdain has also made a lot of insulting comments about other professional chefs.

5. He thinks smoking makes you cool, using drugs prepares people for being famous.

It’s no secret that Anthony Bourdain has struggled with substance abuse issues.  There’s nothing wrong with having a dark past, but trying to glorify it isn’t a good thing – especially when you have a lot of people looking up to you.  According to Bourdain: “I don’t want to encourage anyone to quit smoking. I mean, in my experience, it really does make you cool in school. Chicks love it.”  He has also said that he believes using heroin helped prepare him for fame because, “When you’re a junkie, you’re surrounded by hustlers. You just develop a sixth sense and become a pretty good judge of character.”  Yeah, these probably aren’t the best messages to be sending out.
