Martin Short is a multi-talented actor that has accumulated a net worth of over $25 million throughout his career. Aside from his acting career, Short has profited from songwriting, producing and writing over 42-years of being in show business. Throughout his career he’s also been honored quite a bit being nominated for close to 15 awards and winning an Emmy and Tony Award for his performance in Little Me, the musical. Those are the basics about Short and if you’re familiar with him you’re probably aware that he was born in Canada and his career really took off with his work on Saturday Night Live. Some of his more notable film work includes Three Amigos, Father of the Bride and Innerspace. So we’ve covered what you most likely know about the 64-year old comedic actor, but let’s see if there are a couple things you don’t know about him…
Martin Short had no intention of acting or at least never let on that he did. He attended McMaster University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work in 1971. After graduation, Short intended to pursue his social work, but was also cast in Toronto Production of Godspell that same year. It was that event that changed his course forever.
Actor Eugene Levy and Martin Short go way back. They went to McMaster University together and were also in the aforementioned production of Godspell. They would remain connected throughout their careers and also appear in films together like Father of the Bride. For those of you who don’t immediately recognize the name Eugene Levy, he’s the dad in the American Pie movies.
Martin Short has made a good amount of money doing voice-acting for various productions. One of his most notable works is the voice of the Cat in the Hat in The Cat in the Hat Knows A lot About That, which airs on PBS. The show itself was done in 2010, but you can still find airings of episodes on PBS today.
Martin Short met his future wife Nancy Dolman in 1972 during the run of Godspell. The couple married in 1980 and had three children. Sadly, Nancy Dolman Short died of ovarian cancer on August 21, 2010. Short has actively campaigned for Women’s Research Cancer Fund since the death of his wife. His campaigns have raised a substantial amount of money for the fund.
British Parliament in the Family
Short’s first cousin is Clare Short. Name probably doesn’t ring a bell, but if you live in Britain it probably does. Clare Short is a former member of British Parliament and a former British cabinet minister. She worked in government for 17-years including a staff position under Prime Minister Tony Blair.
