Harry Potter Author J.K. Rowling Restores our Faith in Humanity

J.K. Rowling creates magic for a living. She’s the creator and writer of the Harry Potter series, and even though she’s finished making Harry’s magic, the billionaire author is not finished making magic for others. Last month, 15-year-old Cassidy Stay was shot by a gunman in Texas, surviving the shooting when she made the choice to pretend she was already dead. Unfortunately, she lost her four brothers and sisters and her parents in the attack.

At the memorial service held in honor of her family’s lives, the 15-year-old survivor quoted a famous line by the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, “In the Prisoner of Azkaban, Dumbledore says, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light,”.

In support of the girl and her tragic story, Rowling reached out by sending Stay a handwritten letter written as Dumbledore, complete with purple ink, as well as her acceptance letter to Hogwarts, a Hogwarts list of school supplies, a wand and a book she signed specially for Stay. It might not seem like much to some, but to avid Harry Potter fans (of any age), an acceptance letter to Hogwarts is a big deal. The teen has been through an abundance of tragedy in the past month that no child should ever have to endure, and this simple act of kindness by someone so famous and so immersed in her own life goes to show that kindness still exists.

The teen’s use of Dumbledore’s quote at her family’s memorial spawned an online campaign for Rowling to meet Stay, and the site hasn’t backed down yet. While they are appreciative of Rowling’s gesture, the site wants to keep going until the creator of the famous wizarding tale schedules a meeting with Stay.
