So do you know what Judd Apatow and Eddie Vedder have in common? You’re about to find out but first I need to spout some fanboy dribble. I will admit, I am an old-school Pearl Jam fan. It was near impossible to be a teen in the 90′s and not be. Also, on the other extreme, I am a huge fan of writer/director Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin), so to hear that the two would be appearing in a mini-documentary together really intrigued me. This is two generations of inspiration, folks, so to have them working on the same thing, at the same time, is pretty amazing. Buckle up, this is about to get awesome.
So Pearl Jam sat down with director Danny Clinch recently to shoot a mini-documentary about Lightning Bolt, Pearl Jam’s new record. The documentary also enlists the talents of Judd Apatow and Carrie Brownstein, among others. Eddie Vedder, in an interview with Huffington Post, talks about why he picked Judd Apatow, surfer Mark Richards, and Portlandia’s Carrie Brownstein for the shoot, explaining he had a personal connection with them all and they all understood what the band was trying to do. He thought those efforts could be paired up for this “mini-documentary” and work well on film.
Anyone who knows Pearl Jam knows how quiet they are, so it is nice to see them stepping out in front of the camera for a bit. I would lying if I were to pretend that I wasn’t really curious to see what Judd Apatow has to say about the band. Judd Apatow and Pearl Jam? That is a pairing for the history books. The 90′s meets the 00′s, in one blinding flash of lightning. See what I did there?
