There are some cultures on Hollywood that just seem to have it harder than most, forced to endure an uphill climb against stereotypes and racism in order to make it big in this country. And one such woman who has done that is Julie Chen, host of Big Brother, among other things. What may shock you to find out is just how far the host went to help secure a name for herself in Hollywood. While some people may just need to work out, or grow their hair out, or know the right people, it seemed Julie Chen actually went so far as to get plastic surgery to make her look more American.
While you can read the whole story at Hollywood Life if you click here, to summarize, Julie Chen went on The Talk and came clean about a surgery she had to widen her eyes. And before anyone feels like they need to crucify her or make jokes, we applaud her for being comfortable enough in herself, and honest enough with the world, that she can come clean about this, and about these norms forced on different cultures who may be looking to make it in this country. It is not something most of would ever imagine having to do, but that is what Julie Chen says she felt she “needed” to do it to make any progress in this Country. Kind of makes you sad the stuff people are still willing to do to make a name for themselves.
But again, we raise our glass to Julie Chen for being honest enough to admit it openly, and have come far enough in her life to be able accept that. Maybe if she could go back in time she wouldn’t do it, but the irony is, and we need to admit this as a country and change it, too, maybe she wouldn’t be as well known had she NOT done it.
How’s THAT for food for thought?
