Lakers Owner Jerry Buss Dies at 80

Jerry Buss, the Los Angeles Lakers’ playboy owner died Monday, his assistant said. Buss died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said Bob Steiner, his assistant. He was 79. He’d been hospitalized for cancer, but the immediate cause of death was kidney failure, Steiner said.

While we always used to poke fun at the relationship between Buss and Phil Jackson, it should be noted that Jerry Buss was one of the best owners in the history of sports.  And certainly one of the most successful.  He organized the dazzling “showtime” Lakers in the 80s with Pat Reilly, Kareem, Magic, and Worthy.   He then orchestrated another championship run with Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O’Neal two decades later.   He will go down as one of the best owners in NBA franchise history.

We wish his family well and also the Lakers organization.  To read a full account of his career WFAA did a nice piece on him today.
