Michael Cera Releases Indie Album

'The Immigrant' Premiere - The 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival

Michael Cera shocked fans when he released an Indie album yesterday; the album, True That, consists of 18 short songs from the Super Bad actor.  Cera who is best known for his acting skills – has had starring roles in both film and television productions such as Arrested Development, Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  The Canadian born actor got his start in the Canadian television show, I Was a Sixth Grade Alien, and now has a long list of acting credits to his name.

This album, while a little surprising, is not the first time Cera has expressed an interest in making music, in 2010 Cera, who is also the touring bassist for the group Mister heavenly,  played the mandolin and sang back-up vocals for Weezer’s song “Hold On” from the group’s album, Hurley.  Cera has also taken his musical talents on the set to many of his film roles, in Juno he sang a duet of “Anyone Else but You” with co-star Ellen Page.

When the album was released, Cera’s Super Bad co-star, Jonah Hill tweeted, “My great friend Michael Cera not only is a brilliant actor, he also makes great music” followed by a link to the album.  Cera’s album consists of mostly instrumental tracks and some of Cera’s vocals; on the track, Ruth he sings, “She’d only just lost the baby, seven months and a week / Drank a month of Seagrams, kissed me on the cheek,” showing a more sensitive side to the mostly comedic actor.  Cera uploaded True That on BandCamp with the tags, “alternative / dirty / hello / home recording / modest / music / New York” suggesting that the free-to-stream album was recorded by Cera in a home studio.  For those who want to download True That can do so by paying seven dollars which will also include three bonus tracks.

Cera is certainly not the only actor to pursue a music career.  Many actors such as Jamie Foxx and Will Smith have also had successful careers as both actors and musicians and with Cera’s musical ability he may very well be the next start to join the list.
