One of the most popular shows on television has lost a cast member. Modern Family’s Elizabeth Pena has passed away at the age of 55. The actress appears frequently on the show as the mother of Sofia Vergara’s character. She’s also appeared in dozens of films and television shows throughout her long career. While she’s recently starred in several different shows, her most notable recent appearance is playing the hilarious mother of Gloria, the much younger wife of an older man with grown children of his own on Modern Family.

For more than forty years, Pena has starred in some of the biggest productions in the world. She’s known for her role in La Bamba and Lone Star, Rush Hour and Free Willy 2. Some of the other roles the actress took on included lending her voice to several animated characters. She provided the voice for The Incredibles, American Dad and the Justice League cartoon. She’s also had guest appearances on some of the most popular television series on primetime, and she will be missed. The actress died of natural causes following a short, but undisclosed, battle with illness. Her manager, Gina Rugolo, made the announcement that the star has passed.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague, Elizabeth Pena. She was a role model, a truly extraordinary performer and an inspiration in every sense of the word. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth’s family and friends during this difficult time. She will be deeply missed,” is the statement issued by a spokesperson at El Rey Network, where the actress starred in the show Matador.

The actress leaves behind her husband and two children, as well as a sister and her mother. There has been no announcement as to what illness the actress was suffering and whether or not it contributed to her much too early death.
