Queen Elizabeth Tweets her Very First Tweet
It’s a big day in London for the royal family. No, there is no new baby and no gender reveal or no engagement news to come out the palace; it’s something entirely different. The Queen of England has issued her very first tweet. Welcome to the 21st century Queen Elizabeth! The 88-year-old Queen is not afraid of a little technology, and she busted out her tablet this morning to send her very first tweet from her official account.
“It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R.” read the tweet. It might not seem very exciting, and it’s true that the Queen didn’t actually type the tweet. Someone in her royal entourage typed it for her and the Queen simply hit the “Send” button, but it doesn’t matter. She was visiting the London Science Museum to help open up the new exhibit, and it seemed only appropriate that the Queen use her technology to make the introduction.
She’s had a twitter account since 2009, and she’s never used it. It’s technically a royal account, and she’s got staff members who bother with things like making royal announcements via twitter on her behalf, but the Queen of England can’t let other world leaders outdo her in terms of technological information. After all, even the Pope tweets, so she’s certainly capable of sending a periodic tweet to royal well-wishers and fans. Since her tweet was issued this morning, the Queen’s twitter account has gained an additional 25,000 followers, and the number keeps growing every second. It seems the royal fans want to hear from their Queen directly. This response might mean she’ll send a few more tweets in the near future, but we don’t know that for certain. We just know the people are excited.
