Compton rapper, The Game, is a very active Instagram user. The former G-Unit member uses the platform to interact with his fans, share pictures of his children, and promote his brand. With such an active presence on Instagram it should come as no surprise that the rapper is also using the popular social networking app to hold a contest among fans for the cover art on his next album, Year of the Wolf. The Game’s Year of the Wolf is scheduled to be released on September 30 as a compilation album with his label, and will be his first studio album since 2012’s Jesus Piece and the rapper is hoping to release this body of work with a bang. Several users have already submitted their drawings and The Game seems to be very pleased with what he has received so far. Some of the covers received feature The Game sitting on a thrown next to two vicious wolves, a lone wolf overlooking California, and a picture of The Game’s face joined with a wolf’s.
The Game’s album art contest is a prime example of how social networking can benefit celebrities and their fans. The blood affiliated rapper is often known for the violent lifestyle he participated in before rising to hip-hop fame in 2005; however, in recent years The Game has displayed a more caring side and has also used Instagram to show that side to the public. Game claims that he is the first artist to allow his fans to design his album cover and this contest allows unknown graphic designers and artists to share their talents with with Game’s 2.2 million Instagram followers, and the winning artist will have their work exposed to the world.
Users who want to participate must upload their work to Instagram and use the hashtag #YearOfTheWolf. All entries must be in by Thursday, August 14 and The Game will be announcing the winner on the following Friday. Periodically the rapper will upload some of the pieces he has received to let anyone who is thinking about entering know that this might be a contest, but it certainly isn’t a game.
