Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was indicted by a grand jury Thursday on third-degree aggravated assault for allegedly striking his fiancee unconscious last month. Rice was arrested on February 15th after a physical altercation with Janay Palmer at the Revel Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ. Palmer was also charged with simple assault.
If Rice is convicted, which is most likely, the third-degree crime carries a penalty of at least three years and up to five years and a fine that could be $15,000. Certainly, $15,000 is a drop in the bucket for Rice and we’re accustomed to seeing celebrities and athletes weasel out of prison sentences so it’s unlikely that Rice spends time in jail despite overwhelming evidence.
Speaking of the evidence, a video was obtained by TMZ and made public that showed Rice carrying an unconscious Palmer out of the hotel elevator and laying her on the floor. Rice’s attorney had no choice but to say the video is authentic, but he did say it’s incomplete.
What will end up saving Rice is the fact that neither he nor his fiancee want to pursue the case any further. If justice is served Rice would serve time in jail and his career would most-likely be over, but you can bet your money he’ll be suited up on opening day.
