The upcoming film, Wild, stars Reese Witherspoon as Cheryl Strayed. Strayed spent a summer hiking 1,100 miles of the Pacific Coast Trail and then published a memoir of the same name. Strayed, who traveled from Southern California to the southern border of Washington State. Viewers will get to see Witherspoon recreate Strayed’s amazing journey this December when Wild hits select theaters on December 5.
The movie is directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, who directed the smash hit and critical darling Dallas Buyers Club. Currently the Fox Searchlight release Wild has that December opening weekend all to itself. But chances are good that that will change once the Oscar season calendar begins to fill up.
The movie is not yet rated, but it is believed that the movie will receive an R rating. The film follows Strayed during her desperate solo journey to reclaim herself after the death of her mother and following a debilitating drug-and-sex addiction that leaves her feeling desperate and in need of finding herself again.

Fans of the Oscar-winning actress should look forward to seeing Witherspoon in a gritty performance. Witherspoon tends to succeed when she veers off in more dramatic roles that depart from the 38-year old’s rom-com past, like her role in Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey. The film’s success will hinge on Witherspoon’s gritty performance as Strayed, a role that veers drastically from the parts we are accustomed to her portraying but one that could mark a welcome change for the 38-year-old Oscar winner.
Vallee told Entertainment Weekly, “We wanted to see Reese out there, not vain at all, not concerned with her image, and she went for it. Wait until you see her in the film. It’s a new Reese.”
