Twitter Users Enraged Over Kristen Stewart Interview

Special Screening Of "On The Road"

Last week, actress Kristen Stewart, most famous for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight series, sat down with the Daily Beast to discuss her role in the upcoming film, Camp X-Ray.  The film is named after the the temporary detention facility that once operated at Guantanamo Bay.  The facility was originally intended to house “excludables” during the 1990s before they were sent back to Cuba.  The Camp X-Ray film, which was shown at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be released to theaters on October 17, tells the story of Army private first class, Amy Cole (played by Stewart).  The film follows Cole as she is placed on security duty at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp where she forms an unlikely friendship with a suspected terrorist.

Stewart has been commended for her role as Cole, and during her interview with the Daily Beast, Stewart described her character as “simple, not very smart, and really socially inadequate-but a good person.”  During her interview, which was intended to highlight “the resurrection of Kristen Stewart”, several of Stewart’s statements were taken out of context and spun to make her seem, unpatriotic, anti-feminisn, and just down-right rude.

Following the interview, conservative news outlets across began to report on Stewart’s comments with headlines such as:”Kristen Stewart Trashes the Military, Defends 9/11 Terrorists in ‘Camp X-Ray’ Interview.”  The news quickly spread to Twitter where users from differing points of view expressed their opinions. One user tweeted, “Boycott #Kristen Stewart” while another tweeted  “#KristenStewart trashes military & defends 9-11 GITMO detainees as “misunderstood,” to which someone responded, “can she get any more disgusting?”  One especially angry users even tweeted, “f that #Bimbo #KristenStewart is an example of a #feminist I thank GOD everyday my wife and daughter AREN’T! What a MORON!”

However, Stewart’s fans (and people who appreciate truthful news) quickly jumped to her defense with tweets like “@FoxNews I saw your #KristenStewart headlines re her recent intrvw. Then realized they were misleading, dishonest, sensationalized bologna.”  Another user who had a bone to pick with Fox News over their take on the story tweeted, “@foxnation what is wrong with you?! And you call yourselves journalist. She never trashed them in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER. My God, u disgust me!”

Although Stewart has yet to comment on her remarks, the Twitter battle rages on; however, it appears that most people who read the actual interview, agree that Stewart’s statements were clearly spun to tell another story.  What do you think?
