Wentworth Miller, the star of the popular show “Prison Break” has just revealed he is gay. But it’s the way that he revealed it that’s making more news. Recently Miller was invited to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival but declined the invitation. Prior to the decline Miller never publicly came out but in his rejection letter he did. Here is what Miller said:
“Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline.” Miller continues … “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.” “The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.” He added, “If circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.”
It was the first time that Miller ever admitted to being gay and this is a huge statement about Russia that’s sure to make some waves. With President Obama already having a strained relationship with Vladimir Putin, this statement by Miller could produce more ripples in the United States and Russian political relationship. This isn’t just another actor coming out. While it’s great that more continue to do so, this one will seemingly have political ramifications as well.
