20 Celebrities Who Have Been Cyber Bullied on Social Media
Bullying is a very serious problem that has been around for a long time. But, thanks to advances in technology, people can now bully each other without ever having to come face-to-face. Over the last several years, cyber bullying has become a huge issue, especially among school aged children who use cell phones and social media as main forms of communication.
However, this form of bullying has found its way outside of yards and classrooms right onto the celebrity stage. Many of the biggest stars in the entertainment business have fallen victim to cyber bullying, usually by complete strangers who have become obsessed. Fortunately, because of their fame, many of these stars have been able to speak out against the evils of cyber bullying, in hopes of bringing an end to this awful problem. Here are 20 celebrities who are cyber bullied on social media.
1. Melanie Griffith
Melanie Griffith is no stranger to being bullied over the internet. The actress has received countless hateful tweets in regards to her plastic surgery and overall physical appearance. According to Griffith, Most people are telling me I look horrible. The tweets I get are really nasty.”
2. Cheryl Cole
Cheryl Cole has been very vocal about the need to end cyber bullying, and along the way she has shared that she has actually been a victim of cyber bullying. Cole has stated, “In the last few years, I’ve been bullied on Facebook and Twitter. It’s evil and very public. People judge my appearance and hair, and say that I look fat.” She hopes that by sharing her story, she can help young people who find themselves in similar situations.
3. Elliot Page
Actor Elliott Page has been cyber bullied to the extreme. In 2012, Page made headlines after stories began to surface that a crazy fan had been harassing him online via Twitter. The person even went as far as openly threatening to kill Page.
4. Ciara
Since the beginning her career, R&B singer, Ciara, has received negative comments from the public. In 2013, Ciara finally had enough and decided to respond to an Internet user who had been using Twitter to bully her. The following year, Ciara took things a step further when she wrote an open letter speaking out against cyber bullying. In the letter she stated, “People sure do have a lot of courage when they are anonymous. It’s like a ‘Who Can Say the Nastiest Comment Game.’ I click onto some of the comments from something as fun as an Instagram post that you’re sharing with your fans, and a person finds a way to turn a positive post into a negative. I think to myself, ‘I could pick this person apart so bad but what for? Why act ugly like them?’ It honestly takes the fun out of it when people seem so miserable.”
5. LeAnn Rimes
A few years ago, LeAnn Rimes found herself in a cyber bullying incident that resulted in her having to check into a facility to handle the anxiety that arose from the situation. Apparently, Rimes had participated in a phone call that was illegally recorded and distributed across the Internet. The women who recorded the conversation proceeded to harass Rimes via Twitter, calling her several inappropriate names. Following the incident, Rimes decided to take legal action.
6. Stacey Dash
During the 2012 presidential election, Stacey Dash found herself in the spotlight after she revealed some very unpopular political opinions. People on Facebook and Twitter openly insulted Dash, her ideas, and her intelligence.
7. Caroline Flack
When Caroline Flack began dating One Direction member, Harry Styles, their 14 year age gap quickly brought her under fire from fans 1D fans. On a regular basis, Flack received cruel tweets and comments from people making fun of her age. However, Flack says that her “thick skin” helped her get through the situation.
8. Tamera Mowry
Over the last two years, Tamera Mowry has found herself under attack from cyber bullies a few times. Last year, Mowry was overcome with emotion after being bombarded with racist tweets about her interracial marriage. According to Mowry, “I’ve never experienced so much hate ever in my life, ever,” she said. “I get called ‘White man’s whore,’ the new one was, ‘Back in the day, you cost $300 but now you’re giving it to ‘em for free.’ Stuff that, me as a person, could never even fathom. I can’t even think of these words. It’s very hard for me to think of it because I’m a product of it. My mom is a beautiful black woman and my dad is an amazing white man.”
9. Adele
Since gaining mainstream success, Adele has constantly been criticized because of weight. However, the cyber bullying went to a whole new level after the birth of her son in 2013. Almost immediately after becoming a mother, Adele was met with extremely cruel tweets from people who referred to her child as “fat” and “handicapped” and suggested that she just “murder” him.
10. 50 Cent
50 Cent may not seem like the type of person to get bullied, but cyber bullying knows absolutely no limits. In 2014, 50 opened up about his bout with cyber bullying stating: “When you’re a public figure, you’re public property for them to say these things to you. Online, how many times have you seen people make comments that weren’t called for? It’s just what they’re conditioned for. It’s a place to vent for them because they don’t mean very much in our traditional social environment. The new social networking allows them to say things to you that they wouldn’t say to your face. There’s so many areas that you can look at now that would be considered bullying.”
11. Lorde
In 2013, Lorde began dating a man who was of Asian decent. After putting her relationship on public display, Lorde became a victim of cyber bullying in the form of racist tweets aimed at her boyfriend. In 2014, Lorde spoke out against cyber bullying and revealed that the situation was hurtful.
12. FKA Twigs
When FKA Twigs began dating Twilight star, Robert Pattinson, she quickly became the target of cyber bullying. Twigs began receiving racist tweets from people who did not approve of their relationship. However, Twigs bravely stood up to her cyber bullies, letting them know their comments were not appreciated. She also encouraged other victims of bullying to do the same.
13. Rihanna
Rihanna is certainly no stranger to cyber bullying. However, she has never been the type to sit back and let people talk to her however they want. On more than one occasion, Rihanna has snapped at people who have bullied her via Twitter and Instagram.
14. Kim Kardashian
Since breaking on to the scene in 2003 as the result of a sex tape, Kim Kardashian has been getting cyber bullied left and right. People have insulted Kardashian’s personality, her intelligence, and her family. Kardashian even fears that her daughter, North, will also become the victim of cyber bullying once she is old enough to actively participate in social media.
15. Floyd Mayweather
You’v got to be crazy to bully an undefeated boxer, right? Right. Unless of course, you’re 50 Cent. Ironically, 50, who has been a victim of cyber bullying, became a bully himself. In 2014, 50 began circulating rumors that Mayweather was illiterate, and recorded several video challenging Mayweather to read books including The Cat in the Hat.
16. Monica Lewinsky
In 1998, Monica Lewinky’s affair with former president Clinton became one of the first stories to take the internet by storm. Lewinsky was immediately harassed and bullied by people who had nothing but cruel things to say about her. Although the incident was nearly 20 years ago, Lewinsky is still dealing with the repercussions. As a result, she has been very vocal about ending cyber bullying, and even claims that it is her mission to do so.
17. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan’s personal struggles and subsequent fall from grace have made her a very easy target for cyber bullies. Although many people have tried to turn Lohan into a joke, there really isn’t anything funny about some of the mean tweets and posts she’s received.
18. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has taken a very strong stance against all forms of bullying, and it’s probably because she’s a victim of cyber bullying herself. Lovato, who suffers from an eating disorder, has admitted that she has been cyber bullied to the point of self harm.
19. Chris Brown
Chris Brown has made a lot of mistakes over the course of his career, but that doesn’t mean that it’s okay to bully him. Unfortunately, everyone doesn’t see it that way, and Brown has been cyber bullied consistently throughout the years. Expressing an opinion is one thing, but when it comes to Chris Breezy, people can’t seem to do that without being downright insulting.
20. Charlotte Dawson
In 2014, TV personality/former model, Charlotte Dawson,after years of being constantly bullied via the Internet. Dawson had come under attack from Internet trolls who used platforms like Twitter to insult her, some even urging that she kill herself. Before her death, Dawson had been battling to end cyber bullying and expose those who were bullying people anonymously.
