CCWiVAxUwAIugl6

Over the years, there have been some pretty interesting characters on TV.  With a variety of shows that have come and gone, there’s never been  shortage of compelling and entertaining characters. Some have been funny, some have been smart, and some have been cool.  Then of course, there’s been the characters that are a little harder to place.  You know, the ones you hate most of the time, but secretly find yourself liking.  These characters probably even remind you of people who you’ve known in real life. Although these types of characters can cause an internal struggle, most shows wouldn’t be what they are without them.  Here are 20 television characters we love to hate.

Sam – New Girl

Sam only appeared on the Fox’s New Girl for seven episodes, but that was more than enough time for viewers to form an opinion on him.  Although fans started out disliking Sam, he slowly redeemed himself, but it was still tough for viewers to admit that they might be coming around to him.

"Orange Is The New Black" Season Two Premiere - Arrivals

Sam Healy – Orange is the New Black

Officer Healy is one of the only male characters on the Netflix original series, Orange is the New Black.  Sure, he certainly has his moments, but overall he’s kind of a jerk.  Just when you think you can trust him he screws someone over.  Think about how he treated Piper once he realized he had absolutely no chance to hook up with her. Yeah, exactly.  Still there’s just something about him that kind of makes you feel sorry for him.

iHeartRadio Music Festival - Day 2 - Backstage

Laurel Lance – Arrow

Assistant District Attorney, Laurel Lance, is one of the leading characters on the series, Arrow.  Throughout the series, she’s undergone some changes, and her character has been referred to as ‘the weakest link’ on the show.   To many fans she comes off as the kind of person who something is always happening to, and not the kind of person that makes things happen, which usually isn’t a good quality in anyone.

Anna Sui "Gossip Girl" Collection Debut At Target Pop-Up Store - Inside

Jenny Humphrey – Gossip Girl

Little Jenny Humphrey.  When she first appears on Gossip Girl, she’s a sweet and innocent character who doesn’t stand a chance fitting in with the popular rich kids.  As the series progresses, and Jenny transforms into little J, she loses herself along the way.  Plotting of revenge, and throwing her brother and her friends under the bus all for the sake of popularity makes her extremely difficult to like.

Cast Of "Nashville" Answer Questions From Fans During A SiriusXM "Town Hall" Special At Oceanways Studio In Nashville

Teddy Conrad – Nashville

Over the course of the series, Nashville, Teddy Conrad has become quite the scum bag.  Sure, he loves his daughters (even after he finds out one of them isn’t really is) but something always seems to go wrong when he tries to do the right thing.  At this point, the only thing entertaining about him is watching him turn into his ex father-in-law, Lamar, and wondering how he’s going to screw up next.

Ned Flanders – The Simpsons

Ned Flanders is that annoying neighbor who makes you so happy that 1) he doesn’t live next to you, and 2) he’s not real.  Throughout the entirety of The Simpsons he’s remained a pretty constant and friendly guy, but when it comes down to it, he’s just so nice that you actually end up hating him, and then feeling bad for it all at once.

61st Venice Film Festival: "Vanity Fair"

Joe Carroll – The Following

What is there to like about The Following’s Joe Carroll? He’s a heartless killer with no regard for anyone, even his own family, and will stop at nothing to hurt Detective Ryan Hardy, the series’ [mostly] good guy. Although Carroll has had several near death experiences, major twists in the plot have kept his character in the storyline.  But as unlikable as he, it’s almost impossible to imagine the show without him.

2013 Billboard Music Awards - Arrivals

Juliette Barnes – Nashville

Between her temper tantrums and sense of entitlement, Nashville’s Juliette Barnes, can be difficult to like.  Every time you think she’s going to redeem herself, she does something to make you realize why you (and everyone else on the show) never really liked her to behind with.

SCAD Presents aTVfest - FOX's "Empire"

Luscious Lyon – Empire

Empire’s Luscious Lyon is smart, hard-working, talented…and evil.  Luscious spent the entire season of the show backstabbing the people he “loves” the most to get ahead. Even when it seemed like he was doing something nice, it quickly became clear that he was just using it as another chance to advance himself.  However, even with all of his bad qualities, every good show needs a bad guy like him.

"Girls" Greenroom Photo Op - 2012 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival

Hannah Horvath – Girls

Hannah Horvath, the star character on the HBO series, Girls, is self-absorbed and oblivious.  According to the website: “Hannah believes she has the talent to be a great writer. You know, once she actually writes something. In the meantime, she’s trying to hold down a paying job now that her parents have cut her off financially and she’s without a safety net for the first time.”  Basically, Hannah is a brat, and nobody likes a brat, but then again, she is kind of funny.

Carol Peletier – The Walking Dead

Betty Hofstadt – Mad Men

Thanks to the writers behind Mad Men, Betty is one of the characters on the show that fans love to hate.  According to one fan: While the ladies around her bloom, Betty hardens. Her character (in both senses) gets ever icier, vainer, more alien.” However, Betty does have a few redeeming qualities, and most fans would probably like her…if they could.

2014 Global Citizen Festival In Central Park To End Extreme Poverty By 2030 - VIP Lounge

Harry Apostolou – The Slap

It’s kind of hard to like a person that slaps a kid in the face, but it’s also kind of hard to like a bratty little kid whose parents have absolutely no control over him.  Just like the characters on The Slap, viewers probably found themselves struggling with how to feel about Harry Apostolou.

The Book Of Mormon - Press Night - Arrivals

John Bates – Downtown Abbey

Downtown Abbey’s John Bates hasn’t really won over a lot of hearts.  Even though he started the show as an underdog, there’s something about Bates’ character that’s easy to hate as it is to love. In fact, there are some fans who are kind of hoping his character gets killed of the show.

Tina Belcher- Bob’s Burgers

Tina is an awesome character; she’s pretty funny, and just the right amount of mopey .  But while laughing at one of her many antics, most viewers probably find themselves saying ‘I hate Tina’ at one point or another.  Of course, any hatred for Tina is usually just misguided love.
