No matter which career path you choose, reliability is always important.  Even if your job doesn’t entail any serious responsibilities, it’s important that your employer can depend on you and that your work is consistent.  For Hollywood stars, whose work typically pays millions of dollars and takes place in front of millions of people, this reliability is even more import.  Nobody wants to invest in a start that’s going to be difficult or hard to depend on, and as a result many stars’ find their career’s suffering when they can’t deliver what is expected of them. Although all of these stars are talented, their reputations have taken on lives of their own. Here are 20 of the most unreliable actors in Hollywood.

Mischa Barton

In her role as Marissa Cooper on The O.C. Barton was once the star of one of the most popular shows during its time.  However, she chose to leave the show at the height of its popularity.  It has since been revealed that Barton spent some time in a psychiatric ward in 2009 after she was deemed a danger to herself and others. However, since leaving The O.C. in 2006, Barton has yet to find another leading role, and it’s probably because she seems like a bit of a risk.

Shannen Doherty

Shannen Doherty has found a lot of success throughout her career, but all of the information regarding Doherty hasn’t always been positive.  Doherty has a reputation for being extremely difficult to work with.  Not only has she been called demanding, but apparently her attitude has been called into question to.  During an interview, her former 90210 co-star Jason Priestly stated, “It was a very cool attitude, until it wasn’t.”

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl has starred in some pretty big films throughout her career, but despite her success she has also been dubbed difficult to work with, which always translates into ‘you never know what you’re going to get.’  Heigl’s reputation has been addressed several times throughout her career, and during an interview she spoke on the issue stating, “I would never go out of my way or consciously try to hurt anyone’s feelings or make them feel bad or uncomfortable or not be my professional, do my job, I like my job.” However, her bad attitude isn’t the only thing that has brought her reliability into question.  In 2007, she ruffled a lot of feather when she made some comments about the film Knocked Up (which she starred in) that some people saw as disrespectful.

January Jones

How can you rely on someone who can never seen to get along with anyone she works with? That seems to be the struggle with January Jones.  With a reputation like hers, it’s hard to believe that she hasn’t burned all of her bridges. One of her former Mad Men co-stars, Jared Gilmore, has said, “Be careful around January (Jones). She’s not as approachable as the others. She’s really serious about what she does. Everyone else is so nice.”

Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone’s stone cold reputation precedes her all over the world.  Even film makers in Italy have claimed that Stone is difficult to work with and acted like a total ‘diva’ while on set.  However, those claims aren’t the first regarding Stone’s behavior, and this image she’s made for herself has definitely become a problem for her all over the industry.

Gwyneth Paltrow may look like the kind of all-American actress you can depend on, but apparently, that isn’t always the case.  You never know what you’re going to get with Paltrow on-set, and she has a reputation for not only being difficult, but for just saying ANYTHING. Over the years, Paltrow has become one of the celebrities that people love to hate, even if they don’t know why.

Garey Busey

Throughout the 70s and 80s, Gary Busey had a very successful career.  In 1978, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Buddy Holly Story. However, in 1988, Busey was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident.  Busey was not wearing a helmet at the time and suffered a skull fracture which has resulted in permanent brain damage. Since then, Busey has been a little all over the place, and it’s impossible to predict what he’s going to do next.

At the peak of his career, Mike Myers, was one of the biggest names in Hollywood.  As the title character of the Austin Powers franchise, Myers built a large fan base of people all over the world. However, Myers also gained a pretty bad reputation, and people simply did not like working with him. Over the last several years, Myers’ popularity has definitely declined, and his on-screen appearances have been fewer.

Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer can be pretty unpredictable while on set.  He has a reputation for keeping directors on set for hours to talk about his “character motivation.”  He has even been described as “childish and impossible,” and “the most psychologically disturbed human being I have ever worked with.”  As a result, Kilmer’s appearances have definitely decreased and it doesn’t seem like his career will ever recover.

Edward Norton is reportedly very controlling. Over the course of his career, he has become well-known for being very controlling.  He likes to be involved in every aspect of the films he appears in, which often ruffles some feathers on set, and he has even been known to be extremely demanding of his co-stars which has ultimately made him the kind of person that no one wants to work with.

Chevy Chase is one of the most legendary stars of his generation.  However, his track record does involve him quitting two of his jobs while they were still in production. Chevy Chase was the first original cast member of Saturday Night Live to leave the show, although he did leave on good terms.  However, in 2012, Chase left the cast of the comedy series, Community, during the middle of the fourth season.

Shia LaBeouf seemed to have it all.  He successfully transitioned from a child star to an adult star, and was on his way to really establishing himself as one of the biggest names in Hollywood.  However, LaBeouf started facing legal troubles, and it began clear that all of his focus was no longer on his work.  In 2014, he showed up at the Berlin Film Festival with a bag over his head which said, “I’m not famous anymore.” Since then LaBeouf has been laying low and his behavior has been sporadic and strange.

Whether on stage or on set, one thing about Mariah Carey has been made very clear throughout the years: she is a diva.  Her behavior has long been the source of much of her criticism, and there’s a good chance she could have had a more successful acting career had it not been for her reputation.  There’s enough divas in Hollywood, and there aren’t many people willing to take risks on another one.

Over the last several years, Cuba Gooding Jr’s reputation has become a very serious problem. There’s so many stories about him floating around on the Internet, that at this point it’s hard to tell which ones are true.  Allegedly, Gooding is a rude, unreliable, drug addict who also doesn’t know how to handle himself on social media.  With a track record like that, it’s really no shocker that he hasn’t had any big roles in a while.

Jennifer Lopez may be a pop star, but she’s also found some success as an actress.  Her role in the biopic, Selena, has become classic  – and many of her fans consider that their favorite Lopez role.  However, over the years, Jenny from the block has transformed into a huge diva who many have said is difficult to work with.  But aside from her attitude, her acting skills alone are downright unreliable.  If you’ve ever seen a Lopez film, you’ll know that you just never know what you’re going to get.

There’s no denying the fact that Bruce Willis’ career has certainly been legendary, but he’s had a few missteps along the way.  Over the course of his career, Willis has become known for having a pretty bad temper while on set, and as a result, has been dubbed difficult to work with.  His behavior has even been known to sabotage the promotion of his own films, which was the case with 2013’s Red 2.

Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes definitely had a promising future ahead of her, when she began transitioning from a child start to an adult.  Although she found some success on the big screen, Bynes began having legal trouble in the 2010s which ultimately led to a huge downward spiral.  Although she is just 29 years-old, Bynes has already retired from acting twice, and spent time in jail and rehab.  These days, there’s no telling if Bynes will ever be able to return to work, but her most loyal fans are hoping the day will eventually come.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan was once one of the Disney Channel’s biggest stars.  However, as an adult, her life has seriously spiraled out of control.  It’s been nearly 10 years since Lohan has appeared in an on-screen hit, and it seems like she’s been spending more time in rehab than she has in front of the camera.  In her most recent films, Lohan has been known to not even show up to work consistently. Despite all of her legal and familiar troubles, many still hope that Lohan will one day return  to her glory days, but as of now it isn’t looking too promising.
