The Funniest Parodies of Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass

2013 Billboard Music Awards - Arrivals

In the spring of 2011 Nicki Minaj released the fifth single from her debut album, Pink Friday.  The song, “Super Bass,” was an uptempo track that blended the best of electronic music, pop, and hip-hop.  Originally, the track was not intended to be released as a single; however, the song quickly caught on after pop-star Taylor Swift requested the song during an interview with a radio station in Nashville, Tennessee.  After bragging that she knew could “recite every single lyric to the rap,” the radio host asked Swift to rap one of the song’s verses while on air.  Minaj later credited Swift as being a part of  “Super Bass’s” success, noting that if it had not been for Swift, the song may never have reached some audiences.  Upon its release in the United States, “Super Bass” was only moderately successful.  In the first week the track reached 98 on the Billboard Hot 100.  However, the  song eventually became so popular that it sold more than 4,000,000 copies in the United States alone, making it one of the best selling singles in the United States, also making Minaj the first female rap artist to achieve such success..  “Super Bass” has officially been certified 8 times platinum by the  Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). About.com’s Bill Lamb gave the song positive reviews and attributed much of its success to Minaj’s ability to “masterfully manipulate the mood and the meaning of the words through shifts in emphasis, intonation and phrasing.”

On May 5th 2011, Minaj released the video for “Super Bass.” In an interview she said that she wanted the video to be “colorful and cutesy” to best portray the song’s message.  The video, which opened with Minaj wearing a two toned wig and batting her eyelashes furiously, was described as “vibrant” and “saucy.”  Minaj’s animated persona mixed with the video’s colorful effects made “Super Bass” an even bigger hit and the video currently has more than 4,000,000,000 views on YouTube..

Due to the song’s popularity it quickly became the perfect fodder for comical parodies.  YouTubers from around the world quickly took to the video sharing website to share their parody versions of Minaj’s most popular song.  While some of them did their best to stick to the song and video’s original format, other’s took a completely different approach.  Here are the best parody’s of Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass.”

5. Ugly Drapes

While this parody openly admits that it “makes no sense. at all,” it is still quite entertaining.  Completely revamping Minaj’s original lyrics, this song opens with “this one is for the trees on my big toe/my only friend is that hobo/when I walk into the kitchen I like to scream/cause that hobo is eating my ice cream.”  However, instead of “Super Bass”,  or super anything for that matter, this version of the song dedicates its chorus to everything and nothing all at once.  With the lyrics, “boy you got my donuts swimming away/eating like a bum when it’s chewing on hay/can’t you see that la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lake/got my rubber ducky./ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-make/yeah that’s those ugly drapes,” it’s clear that Minaj’s super hit can be transformed into almost anything.

4. Computer Games

While Minaj’s version of the song is an ode to fly guys, this parody by YouTube user qbanguy is dedicated to computer geeks who apparently need to bathe.  As the video begins, qbanguy dons a blonde wig and borrows Minaj’s signature eyelash flutter.  As he raps, “this one is for the guys with computer systems/sit down all day with the gaming system,” the camera cuts to shots of gamers in the middle of intense competition.  As the song continues, qbanguy does a great job keeping up with Minaj’s original flow; however, the chorus, which includes lyrics like “boy you wash them feet/your socks are runnin’ away,” quickly reminds listeners that this song is a far cry from Minaj’s massive hit.

3. “Super Case”

This parody, created a group of nursing students (Nurseswith Verses) at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, California, opens with, “this one is for the ladies with the nursing vision/top grades, no Cs, East Bay admission.”   While Minaj’s video features good looking men with finely chiseled physiques, Nurseswith Verses’ parody features a skeleton. “Super Case” deals with the relationship between nurses and patients as it cleverly inserts medical terminology and life threatening situations.  Although, this version manages to borrow much of the original chorus, it definitely does not share the song’s original concept.

2. “Look At My Face”

MumbaiChopra’s “Look At My Face” deals with the issues that many women face when dealing with men as  the song details a woman’s interaction with a man who eventually turns out to be a “creeper.”  As the song completes its chorus, MumbaiChopra interrupts the song’s slew of “boom badoom booms” to instruct her male co-star, who is focused on other parts of her body, to look at her face.  Simiarly to Minaj’s ability to “mack them dudes up,” MumbaiChorpa uses her second verse to boast about her ability to “put turn the real mack on” as she easily seduces a young man on a basketball court.  However, she quickly informs the “beast of a guy” that he simply cannot have her “without putting up a fight.”

1. “Super Grace”

This Christian parody of Minaj’s very secular “Super Bass” proves that anything is possible.  Instead of being for “theboys with the boomin’ systems,” this Godly remake is dedicated to “the boys with the true religion” and “the boys with the Bibles.” Although this video is obviously lacking some of Minaj’s original touches, “Super Grace’s” lead singer proudly sports a bright blue wig as she stands in the middle of a group of dancers who carelessly throw their arms in the air as they turn in circles.  The song’s chorus, which says: “God give me your hallelujah, hallelujah grace…give me your super grace” resembles a prayer more than a hip-hop hook.  However, “Super Grace” doesn’t lose any of it’s catchiness as it calls on guidance from the Lord.
