The Twitter sensation ‘Sharknado’ is headed to the big screen for one night only. On August 2, the Regal Entertainment Group will host one of the greatest films of our time for just one night only. ‘Sharknado’ will become a man eating, vicious storm on the silver screen for just one night. This is just one a short month after a paltry 1.4 million viewers watched the show on the SyFy channel on July 11. So why is ‘Sharknado’ headed to theaters?
According to Entertainment Weekly, ‘Sharknado’ took over social media. The Syfy film, which didn’t outperform classics like ‘Sharktopus’ and ‘Piranhaconda’, was buoyed by its fame across social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Thus, while it’s always fun to watch an awfully crappy movie in the comfort of your own home, imagine watching it with hundreds of strangers.
The question is: will you go see ‘Sharknado’ on August 2? It’ll be interesting to see if the Regal Entertainment Group grossly overestimated the potential for people to go out to theaters to see the SyFy atrocity. While I won’t be heading out to the theater, I’m now slightly more curious about ‘Sharknado’. Perhaps I will join the masses and check out the movie on YouTube.
