For females, the world of comedy can be very difficult to penetrate.  For years, the comedy sphere has been mostly dominated by men, and many of the women who were allowed in either didn’t last long.  However, over the last several years, there seems to have been in increase in female comedians, all of whom desire nothing more than to be taken seriously (how ironic).  With an influx of funny ladies, the competition for female comedians has also increased.  While most people have the perception that women cannot compete without becoming catty, these women have proven that competition does nothing more than keep people on their toes.  Here are the 10 funniest women in comedy right now.

Melissa McCarthy is one of the funniest women to hit both the big and small screens over the last couple years.  McCarthy has become a fan favorite for he role in films like The Heat and Bridesmaids.  Although McCarthy’s star is certainly rising, she still maintains her ability to laugh at herself, and she never takes herself too seriously.

Wanda Sykes has been making people laugh for years.  Whether making guest appearances or taking on a lead role, there’s something about Sykes as both an actress and a stand up comedian that draws viewers in. Comedian Margaret Cho has been working in the industry for more than 20 years. Chelsea Handler rose to mainstream during the early 2000s as a member of the cast of the Oxygen hidden camera series, Girls Behaving Badly.  As Handler’s career continued to blossom, she was given her own talk show on the E! Network.  Although The Chelsea Handler show lasted for just one season, Handler was given another opportunity the following year with her late night talk show, Chelsea Lately. For seven years, Handler’s show was a hit among viewers, and as a result she gained a large and dedicated following.  Since the show’s final episode in 2014, Handler has been working on other projects including a Netflix original comedy piece.
