Vanessa Hudgens to Make Broadway Debut

Vanessa Hudgens is no stranger to musicals, but her role in musicals is pretty much limited to the Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” franchise. However, the young actress is making her way from tv movie musicals to Broadway musicals. The lovely and talented young actress is set to appear in her first Broadway production, “Gigi.”

The musical is about a teenage girl being taught to turn herself into a companion for a bored and wealthy playboy type. Of course, the role is one in which she is not supposed to like her new “friend,” bus she ultimately ends up falling in love with him as the musical continues. The show is a revival of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe’s musical that’s set to debut in Washington D.C. in early 2015.

Of her new role in the musical, Hudgens says, “It’s an honor, if anything. I’m over the moon.” She’ll get to don an entirely different wardrobe than what she’s used to wearing in her movies. The play is set in Paris at the turn of the century, which means she’ll be in period-ear clothing that will be a bit heavier and a bit less stylish than the cheerleading uniform she wore for most of the “High School Musical” movies.

She will begin her role in the play at the Kennedy Center in Washington where she will perform from January 16 until February 12 when the production moves to its permanent home on Broadway in New York City. While Hudgen’s has never appeared in a live musical before, she’s looking forward to this new challenge. The 25-year-old actress has been working in Hollywood for a number of years, and she’s not afraid to learn something new and accept a role that’s going to take her outside of her comfort zone.
