You may not know Ed Lauter by name, but you definitely know him by face. He is one of those character actors who has been in everything. Sadly, the well-established actor passed away at 74 years old from mesothelioma. A rare form of Cancer often associated with asbestos exposure. Even if you don’t know the name, we all should all stop for a moment and salute this wonderful character actor who brought so much joy to so many people across his lifetime.
Character actors are often given the tough job of playing the bad guy. The man with the grimace. The guy with the shady past. That is just what Ed Lauter did best. If you saw him on film, he was quite imposing, but they say in real life, he was one of the nicest and most genuine guys you could ever meet. Fox News has a piece about the actor’s untimely passing right here.
The actor claims his best on film experience was working on the original The Longest Yard. Having grown up in various areas of NYC, it seems Ed Lauter had the gift to bring that edge and street smarts to his characters, which is what he will be most remembered for.
Survived by his wife and four children, we offer our genuine sympathies to them in this time of grief. R.I.P, Ed Lauter, and thank you for a great run.
