Richard Donner Says “Goonies 2” is a Go

Entertainment Weekly CapeTown Film Festival Presented By The American Cinematheque & Sponsored By TNT's "Falling Skies" - Day 6

In 1985, the movie Goonies was released. It became an instant classic. To this day, people tune into the movie when it is aired on a random Saturday and Sunday afternoon. To the disbelief (and curiosity) of many, the Goonies may be coming back to the big screen almost 30 years later.

Director Richard Donner let it slip that he was making a sequel to the 1985 film. “We’re doing a sequel” is what Donner told the reporters while signing autographs. According to the director, they are in discussions with the original cast for the film which included Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton and Sean Astin.

The confirmation comes after several years of speculation that the movie would have a sequel. News of Goonies 2 picked up steam in 2010, but there was trouble in creating an effective storyline. The rumors continued, but took a serious turn when actor Sean Aston told reporters during an interview that a sequel will happen and he’d bet his children on it. (For those of you who are familiar with Sean Astin, he’s a very big family man so that pretty much made it a lock).

We will continue to monitor the progress of the movie and let you know when casting decisions get made.
