Reality television has certainly changed the lives of many. For me, it’s filled my DVR. For others, it’s made them famous. Reality television typically requires zero actual skill or talent while still allowing those who are shown on random series to become quite famous. Sure, the American Idol contestants and SYTYCD contestants have actual talent and a reason for appearing on reality television, but you cannot argue that the Theresa Giudice’s and the Tamra Judge’s of the world have no talent. They’re pretty faces who live in cities that seem appropriate for following around women with a specific lifestyle so we can see how the ‘other half’ live (and no thank you to living their lives, am I right?).
Reality shows have made these women and men famous in that they now have spin-off shows, they have cookbooks and relationship books and some of them have even gone on to star in television shows, become models and do plenty of other things that were never a possibility before the world of reality television came knocking on their door. When I think of reality television stars, I typically do not think ‘best-selling author,’ but it turns out that many of our favorite reality stars are actually just that; best-selling authors. Read on to find out which of our favorite housewives and contestants have gone on to write books that people just cannot put down.
This is always a shocking one for us, not because we don’t think that Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi has done a lot of growing up since her Jersey Shore days, but because she never quite came across on television as someone who would ever be interested in, or talented enough to, write a book. She did, though, and it’s a best-seller. “It’s a Shore Thing,” is something people love to read, but there is some speculation she did not actually write the book herself. Hmmm…
She’s one of the best housewives ever to grace the television, originating in New York City, getting her own spin-off and then another spin-off and then a talk show in addition to her line of cocktails and cook books and other business ventures. She’s also a wealthy woman because of all of the above, and she has several best sellers. One of which is called “A Place of Yes,” a book that appeared in my stocking a few Christmases ago and was, much to my surprise, actually a very good read.
You know him from The Doctors, but that is not where he became famous. No, the doctor actually starred as one of the first few men that went looking for love with 25 beautiful women in the ‘most dramatic rose ceremony ever,’ on The Bachelor. Fortunately, he was given a second chance at not being that guy and now he’s famous for other reasons. One of which is his book, “The Doctor’s Diet,” and it’s become a best-seller.
Whatever it is about this family that has turned the world into such huge fans continues to amaze me. It’s not that they don’t come across as a nice family. I don’t watch the show, but I do see them in interviews and something I really do admire is their clear sense of family and devotion toward one another; they place importance on God and family, and I like that. That said, I wouldn’t have chosen then as my first pick for best-selling authors from a reality series.
She was recently removed from the lineup of the Beverly Hills housewives, but that doesn’t change the fact that she was once a reality star turned best-selling author with her famous book “Drinking and Tweeting,” and nothing shocks us more. She’s brash and out there and a bit on the uncouth side, but she managed to pull in millions from her book deal.
She began her career starring on the southern California reality television show Laguna Beach and then followed that up with a move to LA to star in The Hills, and now she is a little bit of everything, including the author of several best-selling novels that have sold millions of copies and made her even more famous than she already was before she became an author.
She often has a difficult time putting complete sentences together and pronouncing words and phrases correctly, but on print you cannot even tell. The real housewife and current prison inmate from New Jersey has several best-selling cook books, including her “Fabulicious” and “Skinny Italian,” books.
She’s the momager to the Kardashian clan and the matriarch of the family, and she’s also a best-selling author. We do strongly suspect that a ghost writer did her job for her, since she’s not exactly open in terms of her schedule and free time with a half dozen kids to manage on her own – as well as her busy personal life. However, she’s a best-selling author, too; because, you know, she needed the income.
Remember when Bachelor Jason Mesnick chose her at the final rose ceremony and then dumped her on national television saying that it was the other finalist he actually wanted to be with (to whom he is now married and has fathered a child with)? Yes, she decided that this particular moment in her life was so humiliating that she would write a book about it so she could relive it forever and ever and ever; and it’s a best-seller.
She’s a reality star, a stylist to the stars and a fashion designer; why not add best-selling author to her list of accomplishments? She is someone who has taken the world by storm, written about it and cashed in on it at every available turn. And good for her, too, since she clearly needs to do something else with her life since she’s not busy enough with her other careers, her husband and their children. We admire her drive and her ambition.
