Barack Obama Sings Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy”
Iggy Azalea’s hit single, “Fancy,” is arguably the hottest single of the summer. The Australian hip-hopper’s ode to all things fancy is an up-tempo slick talking track with lyrics that can transform even the most average listener into a fast-life loving lip-syncer. Earlier this summer when parody song writer, Weird Al transformed Azalea’s hit into his own version of the song which he titled “Handy” it seemed that “Fancy” had officially transcended the hip-hop realm. Yesterday, the song’s popularity became even more apparent when the YouTube account “baracksdubs” released a video of the President “singing” the first verse of Azalea’s “Fancy.”
Barack Obama’s one minute and 17 second version of the song is made from a mash-up of presidential speeches and the words that correspond with the song’s lyrics are extracted and put in the proper order. The carefully crafted video includes popular song lines such as “first things first, I’m the realest,” and “drop it low and pick it up, just like this.” Currently, the video has over 1,000,000 views and it joins what has become a Barack’s Dubs tradition in which the youtube channel releases a video of the President “singing” the hottest song of the summer. Barack’s Dubs’ has taken on hits from artists such as Justin Bieber and has currently uploaded 25 videos, mostly featuring President Obama but also with guest appearances from Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Mitt Romney. This video comes less than a week after Iggy Azalea performed “Fancy” at Lollapalooza, a music festival where President Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia, was in attendance.
The Barack’s Dubs channel was created by Fadi Saleh , a biochemistry student at the University of Tennesee, and with 604,394 subscribers the channel has carved out a unique niche in the internet world. Saleh says that he will continue to make videos until people no longer find the them entertaining; however, he notes that that time appears to be somewhere far off in the future as “people don’t seem to be tired of it yet – or getting anywhere near tired of it.” Those who want to be kept updated on the President’s latest musical masterpieces can subscribe to the barackdubs YouTube channel. The next video, which will be President Obama’s rendition of Ariana Grande’s “Problem”, is slated to be uploaded on August 18.
