Bernie Sanders Net Worth
Bernie Sanders is an American politician with an estimated net worth of approximately $330,000. Born on September 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, he is the son of Dorothy and Eli Sanders. His family is a mixture of both Polish and Jewish immigrants who came to the United States long before he was born, his grandparents both killed in the Holocaust. Bernie Sanders states that his interest in politics took root at a very early age. He once said that when Adolf Hitler was elected in 1932 and subsequently killed more than 50 million people as a result of that one decision that it hit him just how important that politics really are.
As a child, Bernie Sanders was a natural athlete. He played basketball in school and earned a state championship as a result. That was elementary school. By the time he reached high school, he was the track team captain as well as a good student. His parents instilled in him the value of hard work, education and the value of a dollar at a very early age, and his successful academic career proves that they were very good at teaching him what he needed to know. Unfortunately, his first attempt at politics came in high school when he ran for class president, and he was third of three in terms of election results. He did not allow that to deter him, however, and he continued to pursue his dreams of politics.
Bernie Sanders does not have the same college pedigree that many of our well-known politicians have. He began his college career at Brooklyn College and eventually transferred to the University of Chicago where he graduated in 1964 with a degree in political science. He married, bought a house in Vermont, divorced and spent several years working odd jobs here and there. He went on to have a baby with a woman by the name of Susan Campbell Mott in 1969, but did not marry Jane O’Meara Driscoll until 1988. She had three children already, and he considers them each his own. She is a former Burlington College president, and she has been by his side throughout his political career.
At that point, Bernie Sanders was already involved in politics. He was elected Mayor of Burlington in 1981. He was elected for three more terms following that one as a socialist. In 1990, he was elected into the US House of Representatives. He was the first socialist ever elected into this role. He began his run for senate in 2005 and was sworn in by Vice President Dick Cheney in 2007. With a very high approval rating, he spent many years one of the most popular politicians in the country, which might be part of the reason he is now in the run for President of the United States. He announced his run for President in April 2015, and he hopes to become president of the United States with many of the Democratic leaders of the senate showing him support for his efforts.
