Actress Renee Zellweger has been acting for more than 20 years. She made her on-screen debut in an uncredited role in the popular 90s film, Dazed and Confused. Zellweger continued to land numerous roles throughout the early 90s; however, it wasn’t until 1995’s Jerry Maguire that Zellweger got her big break.  The film was a critical success, and Zellweger’s performance was highly praised. According to the popular movie review website, Rotten Tomatoes: “Anchored by dazzling performances from Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Renée Zellweger, as well as Cameron Crowe’s tender direction, Jerry Maguire meshes romance and sports with panache.”

In 2001, Zellweger landed another role that would help immortalize her career. After becoming the title character in the film Bridget Jones, Zellweger received criticism for not accurately fitting the character’s description of being both British and overweight.  However, when the film debuted, Zellweger proved the naysayers wrong.  To prepare for the role, Zellweger trained to perform with an English accent.  She also gained 20 pounds so that she could portray the character more accurately.  In the film, Zellweger put on one of the best performances of her career, and earned an Academy Award for Best Actress.

In the years since recieving her biggest film roles, Zellweger has continued to give her all when appearing on the screen.  Throughout her career, Zellweger has delivered many memorable lines that have made both her and her acting abilities impossible to forget.  Here are five of the best Renee Zellwegger movie quotes.

5. “How about a little piece of integrity in this world that is so full of greed and a lack of honorability that I don’t know what to tell my son! Except, “Here. Have a look at a guy who isn’t yelling ‘Show me the money.” Did you know he’s broke? He is broke and working for you for free! Broke. Broke, broke, broke. I’m sorry I’m just not as good at the insults as she is.”

In the 1995 film, Jerry Maguire, Zellweger’s character, Dorothy Boyd is a young single mother trying to stay afloat. Throughout the film, Dorothy struggles with every day life decisions, and also contemplates whether or not she should remain in a relationship with Maguire although she feels like he does not love her.  In this quote, which highlights Dororthy’s concern about the lessons she is passing down to her son, it is clear that raising a child often consists of many stressful moments of self-doubt.

4. “At times like this, continuing with one’s life seems impossible… and eating the entire contents of one’s fridge seems inevitable. I have two choices: to give up and accept permanent state of spinsterhood and eventual eating by alsatians, or not. And this time I choose not. I will not be defeated by a bad man and an American stick insect! Instead, I choose vodka. And Chaka Khan.”

The 2001 film, Bridget Jones’s Diary, focuses on the film’s title character, and her quest for love and self-improvement.  However, this quote proves just how thankless such a quest can be. Although Bridget Jones’ story is purely fiction, many people are dealing with similar issues in real life.  Trying to find a suitable mate, especially in a world where people are often so disconnected, can be extremely difficult.  However, borrowing Bridget Jones’ coping mechanism may help ease the stress.

3. “Stories don’t always end where their authors intended. But there is joy in following them, wherever they take us.”

The 2006 film, Miss Potter, which stars Zellweger in the film’s title role, is a biographical drama that follows the life of children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. As both a writer and an artist, Potter understood the significance of allowing people to draw their own inclusions from a body of work. Although short, this quote gracefully explains how many stories develop a life of their own that is often separate from what the author originally intended.

2. “Take my advice and stay away from broken people.”

This line from the 2002 film, White Oleander, is perhaps some of the best advice a person could give.  Zellweger’s character in the film, Claire Richards, was a former actress who was struggling with being broken herself.  Initially, Claire provides a safe environment for the film’s young character, Astrid, who was placed in Claire’s custody.  Unfortunately for Claire, she was unable to follow her own advice, and by the end of the film she had committed suicide.

1. “I love him! I love him for the man he wants to be. And I love him for the man he almost is.”

This heart warming line from the 1995 film, Jerry Maguire, simply sums up all of the complications of love. Although many people seem to have trouble expressing themselves, Zellweger’s character, Dorothy, was able to acknowledge that sometimes you have to meet a person where they are and love them for they are in that exact moment. Although love isn’t perfect, and neither are people, Dorothy proves that none of that matters when you’ve found someone worth opening up for.
