Carl Froch: 10 Things You Didn’t Know

Carl Froch

Before stepping out of a boxing ring for the final time in 2014, Carl Froch had established himself as one of the most successful and recognizable British athletes on the sporting landscape. Froch was loved for his ruthless streak within the confines of the ropes. He was a very tenacious boxer with an incredible chin. He was only knocked down twice during his career and only tasted defeat twice in 35 professional fights.

Since retiring, he has made the transition into boxing punditry. Froch is one of the more outspoken, opinionated pundits you could come across, he’s also been known to wax lyrical a little too often about his talents and various achievements inside the squared circle. Here are ten interesting facts about Nottingham’s favorite son, some he might want to boast about a bit more than others.

10. Froch is a four-time world champion

On December 6th 2008, Froch defeated Canadian Jean Pascal to become World Super-Middleweight champion for the first time – in front of a partisan home crowd at Nottingham Motorpoint Arena.  Twice he has bounced back from world championship defeats to claim another world title on his very next appearance.  In May 2013, he avenged his world title loss to Mikkel Kessler, via a unanimous decision at London’s O2 Arena. Defending his IBF Super-Middleweight title and claiming Kessler’s WBA title in the process. He held onto both those world titles until he retired just over a year later.

9. His nickname is “The Cobra”

One would think this nickname might have spawned from the fact Froch had a venomous jab, or once he sunk his fangs into his opponents, he very rarely let go. However, Froch was simply handed the nickname by his trainer Rob McCracken, whilst the two were having a nickname brainstorming session over a bowl of pasta.

8. He holds the modern British boxing attendance record

After the controversial ending to their first fight, a rematch between Froch and British challenger George Groves was what the public wanted to see. After it was announced England’s national stadium, Wembley would be the host of their final showdown, the box-office went berserk. On his final appearance in a boxing ring, Froch knocked out Groves in front of 80,000 baying British boxing fans – the largest attendance figure ever for a boxing match in Britain, in the post-war era.

7. Carl’s got the acting bug

Carl has openly spoken about his desire to get into the acting industry over the last few years. He recently revealed that he had accepted a small part in a British film called “Once Upon a Time in London.” The movie, directed by Terry Stone – who is a personal friend of Froch’s – is also rumored to star Jason Statham as the lead role as infamous 1930s gangster, Jack “Spot” Comer.

6. He could return to the ring

Froch has never ducked questions of a possible return to boxing and he’s always been adamant that, if the right situation arose, he would have no problem pulling the gloves back on and stepping back in the ring. Recently, reports have been circulating that his team have been in discussions about possibly challenging Gennady Golovkin, who defeated fellow Britain Kell Brook earlier this year. If that super-fight ever was to materialize, it would set the boxing world ablaze with excitement.

5. Carl is a keen poker player

Froch has always had an interest in playing poker and after his retirement, he became an ambassador for partypoker. He won a No-Limit Hold ‘em competition against seven professionals called Beat The Boss and he was also one of the mentors on PartyPoker’s recent Big Bluff competition, where four British celebs and poker novices, faced off on the felt to try and win the prize for their chosen charities.

4. He’s one half of a very glamorous couple

Carl is currently engaged to former glamour model Rachael Cordingley. The couple already had two children together when Carl got down on one knee – moments after he knocked out Groves at Wembley – and popped the question in the middle of the ring. Since their engagement, the couple have welcomed their second daughter into the world, meaning Rocco and Natalia have a new baby sister, Penelope to look after.

3. He nose about cosmetic surgery

Over a decade of carrying a target on your nose means boxers can seriously harm their hooters throughout their career. Although Froch himself hasn’t spoken about it publicly, he hit sports screens this year with a neat new nose, noticeably different from the beak he boxed with during his time in the ring.

2. Carl Froch Net Worth

Amassed mostly through his achievements in the boxing ring, as well as various other ventures – and more recently, his expanding portfolio of property redevelopments – Froch’s net worth is estimated to be around the $20 million mark.
