Katy Perry Net Worth

Katy Perry is a singer with an estimated net worth of $260 million. Born October 25, 1984, the 31-year-old singer actually goes by a stage name. Her real name is actually Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. She goes by Katy, and she chose the name Perry to use as a stage name because she did not want to use her given name. Perhaps because she released her first album in 2001 as Katy Hudson and it did not do well at all in terms of popularity or sales, and because she was worried that doing her job as Katy Hudson would confuse her with the famous actress Kate Hudson. She made the decision to use her mother’s maiden name with her own nickname to help launch her career. Born to Maurice Hudson and Mary Perry, both of whom are Pentecostal Pastors, she spent a lot of time moving across the country in temporary moves as her Santa Barbara-based parents opened churches everywhere they went.

Because Katy had a love of singing, her parents decided it might be a good idea for her to use vocal lessons so that she could become better at it; though they intended for her to become a gospel singer. She would sneak her friends’ CDs and tapes so that she could sing popular music, which was not something she was allowed to listen to in her very religious home. She made the decision to obtain her GED when she was only 15 rather than attend high school so that she could begin her musical career. She began to receive attention from rock music writers, who helped her hone her talents and helped her find the people she needed to launch her career, including the release of her first album in 2001 – a gospel album.

It did not take her long to realize that she was not really into singing gospel music, so she returned to Los Angeles at the age of 17 to sign with a label called Java, which is part of the Island Def Jam Music Group. It was too late for her when the labeled was canceled, and she then had to go on to find a new solo contract with Columbia Records. She then spent several years working with famous writers including Desmond Child and Kara DioGaurdi – former American Idol judge – before she was dropped from the company in 2006.

She began dating the lead singer of the Gym Class Heroes, Travie McCoy, and appeared in their video for “Cupid’s Chokehold,” in 2006 after being named the “Next Big Thing” by Blender in 2004. That’s when someone from Virgin Records was able to listen to her music, signed her to Capitol Records and began to arrange with her to work on something that would make her an overnight sensation. That was in 2007. That’s when she and Dr. Luke co-wrote “I Kissed a Girl,” and added it to her music – and she was an overnight sensation. When Madonna called it her favorite song in 2008, everyone began listening to it and Katy Perry became a sensation.

She’s since released 3 albums, “One of the Boys” in 2008, “Teenage Dream” in 2010 and “Prism,” in 2013. She’s toured the world several times and her album sales and tours gross hundreds of millions of dollars. That’s how Katy Perry earns her significant net worth.
