What Life Would be Like for Kendall Jenner if it were the 70s

KIIS FM's 2012 Jingle Ball - Night 2 - Arrivals

Over the last few years, Kendall Jenner has gone from being Kim Kardashian’s relatively unknown little sister, to becoming a famous model.  At just 19 years-old, Kendall is already living a lifestyle that most people can only dream of.  She gets to travel the world, attend pretty awesome events, run her own business, and make way more money than the average American. However, as much as Kendall’s success can be attributed to her own hard work, talent, and family connections, have attributed to her super stardom, her success is also a huge sign of the times.  Think about it, had this been a few decades ago, things would have been very different for Jenner and the rest of her family. Here is what life would be like for Kendall Jenner if it were the 70s.

She would have had to work a lot harder

No one is knocking Kendall’s hustle, but it’s no secret that had it not been for Keeping Up with the Kardashians, no one would even know who Kendall Jenner is, never mind be worried about keeping up with her.  Thanks to reality TV, Kendall had the benefit of millions of viewers being able to be introduced to her before she was even pursuing a career.  Because of that, she already had a built-in fan base when she decided to head for the big time. In the 70s, becoming a reality TV star simply wouldn’t have been an option for Kendall, or anyone else for that matter.   Cable TV didn’t even become a widespread thing until the 80s, and reality TV didn’t make its debut until 1992.

There wouldn’t be so much emphasis on her personal brand

Personal branding isn’t really a new concept, in fact, Kendall’s father, Bruce, was all about building his brand after winning  Olympic gold. But, over the last few years celebrities have gone crazy trying to build and promote their personal brands. Kendall’s brand currently includes nail polish, a clothing line that she shares with her younger sister, Kylie, and a shoe and handbag line.  It’s crazy to think that someone who hasn’t even reached the legal drinking age has already built such an empire.  However, because information travels much faster now than it did 40 years ago, Kendall was able to build a following for all of her products with just a few posts on social media.  Yay for technology.

She would have a lot more competition

This is no insult to all of the pretty socialites turned models that are currently running around the industry, but things are a little bit easier now than they were for those who came before. Now, there seems to be much more opportunity for people to create their own lanes and kind of just do whatever they want as opposed to competing with a huge group of people. Thanks to technology and social media, it’s not possible to kind of be in two places at once, and it’s extremely easy to build relationships with people all over the world.  That’s not to say that competition today isn’t fierce, because it is, but it’s just different. If you had to pick Kendall’s biggest competition right now? Who would it be? If you can even think of a name, there’s a good chance that Kendall has somehow already surpassed them. Well during the 70s, that simply wouldn’t have been the case.  Kendall would have found herself up against some stiff – and now legendary – competition including Jerry Hall, Iman, and last, but certainly not least, Janice Dickinson.

Her fashion sense would be completely different

Fashion trends come and go with each passing decade, and although it’s not uncommon for things to come back around – some decades have more memorable looks than others; the 70s is one of those decades.  Please take a second and try to imagine Kendall Jenner rocking some bell bottom jeans and an apple jack hat.  It might not be the coolest look by today’s standards, but it will definitely cut her some slack with all of the people who feels she often looks and dresses much older than she really is.

She probably wouldn’t even be famous in the first place

Let’s face it, the only reason that Kendall Jenner is famous is because of the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians. If it weren’t for that show, there’s a pretty good chance that the only Kardashian you would have ever heard of is Robert (senior) and the only Jenner you would recognize is Bruce.  Reality TV combined with the internet and social networking, have provided a platform for young people like Kendall to turn themselves into stars. Without some of the technological advances that we all enjoy today, Kendall would be kissing her career goodbye.  Well, it looks like this is the perfect time for Kendall, because the 70s may not have been the right decade for her.
