The Most Meaningful Lauryn Hill Lyrics

Rapper/singer Lauryn Hill, is one of the most critically acclaimed female rappers of all-time.  She rose to fame in the early 90s as a member of the hip hop group, The Fugees.  Hill was often hailed for her ability to entertain audiences by both rapping and singing.  Her socially aware lyrical content separated Hill from other female rappers during the 90s, and in 1998 when she released her debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, she was instantly considered one of the greatest.  Unfortunately, the album remains Hill’s only solo project, and she has remained mostly under the radar since the late 90s.  However, Lauryn Hill’s work continues to influence the music industry and her words are still quoted often.  Here are the most meaningful Lauryn Hill lyrics.

5. “Nothing left, he stole the heart beating from my chest/I tried to call the cops, that type of thief you can’t arrest/Pain suppressed, will lead to cardiac arrest/Diamonds deserve diamonds, but he convinced me I was worth less…”

All relationships have ups and downs; however, the situation Lauryn Hill is describing in Manifest seems to be full of more downs than ups. Describing a situation in which a boyfriend mistreated her and made her feel worthless, it is clear that Ms. Hill has finally learned that she is worth much more than she was getting in the relationship.

4. “Just as Christ was a Superstar, you stupid, Sir!/They hail you then nail you, no matter who you are/They’ll make you now then take you down, and make you face it…”

As the old saying goes, “they hated Jesus too,” and Lauryn lets listeners know that none of us are exempt from the cruelties of the world and the people who live in it.

3. “I’ll never be jealous/And I won’t be too proud/Cause love is not boastful/And love is not loud.”

Sometimes we all need to remind ourselves to remain humble.

2. “How you gon’ win when you ain’t right within?”

In one of her most memorable lines, Lauryn Hill asks listeners a seemingly simple question.

1. “Don’t be a hard rock when you truly are a gem.”

In a world where showing emotion is often seen as weakness, Lauryn Hill urges fans to remain true to themselves – even if that means showing a softer side.
