It appears that Michael C. Hall, best known for his role on Showtime’s hit series, Dexter, will be taking his talents to Broadway. According to recent reports, Hall will be joining the cast of the Broadway musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The musical tells the fictional story of a German rock and roll band fronted by a transgender lead singer named Hedwig.  Since its debuted in 1998, the musical has gained a cult following and has since won several awards; Hedwig and the Angry Inch was also turned into a film of the same name in 2001.

Hall will be taking over the lead role beginning on next month and continue his tenure on the show until early next year. He will replace the current actor Andrew Rannells, who took over for over for Neil Patrick Harris in August. When Neil Patrick Harris, who won a Tony Award for his performance,  was in the leading role, Hedwig and the Angry Inch became one of Broadway most popular and best selling shows, regularly reaching million dollar weeks. Producers are hoping recreate this success with Hall, hoping that his television fame will help draw large numbers in attendance as with Rannells in the lead has been more modest.

While most people may only be familiar with Hall’s on screen work, his role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch will not be his first time acting on stage. Hall actually a seasoned on stage presence and made his first on appearance in 1998 as Posthumus in William Shakespeare’s Cymbeline.   In 2003 Hall toured as part of the cast of the popular musical Chicago where he played the role of lawyer, Billy Flynn and Hall is currently starring on stage in the production of The Realistic Jonses.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch’s producer, David Binder, says that while the role will be Hall’s first musical theater role in over a decade, Binder believes that Hall is “the right kind of artist for the role.” Binder also says that Hall is “very enthusiastic” about his role in the musical and has already begun rehearsing.

Fans of Hall’s work can catch him in the production from October 16 until January 4.
