The Five Best James Corden Moments at the Tony Awards
James Corden had probably one of the toughest jobs in Hollywood this weekend when he hosted the Tony Awards on Sunday evening. Honoring the best of the best in theater, the night should have been a fun one. It’s an evening in which people get to celebrate and they get to spend time honoring those who are so amazing on stage, in their writing and in every aspect of Broadway. Unfortunately, the joyous events of the evening were turned sad and were soured by news Sunday morning that a horrible, hateful, awful, sadistic man entered an Orlando Nightclub and heartlessly murdered more than 50 innocent people out to have a great time with their friends. He injured more than 50 more, and the entire world is shaken to the core.
I live near Orlando, and my husband and I take our kids to Disney every few weeks. This hit very, very close to home for us – and it’s been tragic. James Corden did a magnificent job hosting this show despite the sadness in the air, and he deserves some serious accolades for even taking on this job. He was stellar, and we want to share with you our favorite moments.

The Opening
Let’s face it, this was the best moment of the entire show. We know that James Corden is a greatly spirited singer (we use the term great lightly) from his karaoke moments in his celebrity carpools, but we didn’t know just how much fun he could be. Someone sign this man up for a role on Broadway, because he has some seriously entertaining skill and capabilities that we want to see. I’d pay for that.
The Orlando Tribute
“On behalf of the whole theater community and every person in this room, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity. All we can say is you are not on your own; your tragedy is our tragedy. Theater is a place that every race, every creed, every sexuality is equal, embraced, and is loved. Hate will never win. Tonight stands as a symbol and celebration of that principle,” he stated. Short, sweet and simple, his statement hit home and was perfectly executed.
The Super Bowl
“This is like the Super Bowl for people who don’t know what the Super Bowl is,” he joked during his speech. We thought it was pretty funny, probably true, and definitely worth a few giggles.
The Hamilton Jokes
While we loved most everything James Corden had to offer during the show, the best line of the night went to Hamilton (surprise, surprise). Corden promised, “I promise tonight’s show won’t be all about Hamilton. There will also be commercial breaks.” Insert the moment we all spit our wine out to laugh.
Oprah for the Win
When James Corden teased the people in the audience with the promise of Tony, he also gave a little promise to Oprah that had everyone in stitches. “There are so many people tonight who could be taking away a Tony. Except this little lady, who could be taking him a James,” he said as he looked suggestively at Oprah Winfrey, who laughed with delight.
