10 Things You Didn’t Know about Ronda Rousey

Premiere Of Lionsgate Films' "The Expendables 3" - Arrivals

Undefeated mixed martial artist, Ronda Rousey, is currently one of the most popular figures in professional sports. The 28-year-old cage fighter has proven time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned with every time she steps into the cage.  But despite the fact that she’s never been beaten, many believe that Rousey is just another overrated athlete who will eventually be knocked off of her throne. However, Rousey recently, silenced the haters after knocking out her opponent just 34 seconds after the fight began.  Now that her greatness has been solidified, people everywhere are dying to know more about the champ. Here are 10 things you didn’t know about Ronda Rousey.

She almost didn’t survive birth

Ronda Rousey may seem untouchable when she fights, but that wasn’t always the case.  When Rousey was born, her umbilical cord nearly choked her to death. In fact, Rousey went without oxygen long enough to cause brain damage, and as a result, her development was delayed.  Rousey didn’t even learn to speak until she was around five or six years old.

Her first trip to the hospital had nothing to do with fighting

As an MMA fighter, injuries are something that Ronda Rousey has had to learn to deal with over the years. While you may think her first trip to the hospital had something to do with fighting or playing sports, it was actually for something pretty embarrassing. While playing a childhood game with her sisters, Rousey accidentally stuck a Raisinet too far up her nose and had to be taken to the hospital to have it removed.

She loves caffeine

Someone who competes at a high level like Rousey has no choice but to stick to a very strict diet and workout plan. However, everyone knows that even the most dedicated people have moments of weakness, and for Rousey those moments are triggered by caffeine.  Apparently, Rousey loves caffeine so much that she made sure her nutritionist came up with a workout plan that allowed her to consume as much caffeine as she wants.

She loves Pokemon

During the late 90s and early 2000s, the Pokemon craze was sweeping the nation. While the buzz has since died down, Ronda Rousey is still a self-proclaimed Pokemon lover.  According to Rousey, “I’ve gotten every single version of every generation of the game. I got Blue. I beat Blue. I got Red. I beat Red. I got Yellow. I beat Yellow. And then when Gold and Silver and Platinum came out, I got all three of those and beat those. Just the first game that I got alone, that one cartridge had 200 hours on it. The White, the Black, the X, the Y, the X2, the Y2, Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Stadium 2. I got the perfect score in Pokemon Snap.”

She is the daughter of a Judo champion

While there’s no denying that Rousey’s success is due to hard work, she may have had a little extra help from the gene pool. Rousey’s mother, Ann Maria De Mars, was the World Judo Champion in 1984. In fact, Ronda even got her signature arm bar move from her mother. Talk about passing things down from one generation to the next!

She has four victories under 30 seconds

While some people are used to seeing fights that last for several rounds, Ronda Rousey doesn’t even like to let her opponents make it to the second round. Four of Rousey’s professional wins, have been earned in less than 30 seconds. In fact, only one fighter has made it past the first round in a fight with Rousey.

Her left ear is disfigured

Sure, most people aren’t paying too much attention to Ronda Rousey’s ears, and she probably likes it that way.  Rousey’s left ear has a feature common among combat sports athletes called cauliflower ear which happens after an ear is repeatedly slammed and swells up with fluids. Rousey has taken to using her long hair to cover her left ear, but since she is a warrior, she would probably not hesitate to show her ear if asked.

She’s the author of a book

Between training and acting, Rousey has a pretty busy schedule, but she still managed to find time to write a book titled, My Fight/Your Fight. The book, which chronicles Rousey’s personal story while providing her readers with pieces of advice, has become a best seller on Amazon and a fan favorite among book lovers.

She doesn’t take kindly to domestic abuse

Ronda Rousey is fearless in and out of the cage, and she has no problem standing up for what she believes in. After accusations that undefeated boxer, Floyd Mayweather, had a thing for hitting women, Rousey stepped up to the plate and challenged him to hit her. Rousey stated, “Well, I will never say that I can’t beat anyone. I don’t think that me and him would ever fight, unless we ended up dating.”

She’s the UFC’s first female fighter

These days, Ronda Rousey is so big, it’s kind of hard to believe that she is truly the first of her kind. In 2012, just a year after UFC president, Dana White, declared that there would “never” be women UFC fighters, Rousey became the first female fighter to sign on with the UFC, and the rest has literally been history.
