The Biggest Morgan Freemen Sellout Movie Roles of his Career

Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman will certainly go down in history as one of the greatest actors of his generation.  The Academy Award winner has found success on both the big and small screen and the stage.  However, despite his great success, Freeman has also taken on some questionable roles.  While it’s clear that no one is perfect, and a few flops are to be expected, some of Freeman’s roles have led both fans and critics to wonder what was going through his head in the first place.  As a result, many believe that Freeman has become a ‘sellout,’ sometimes taking roles for money, rather than for the art of acting.  Here are the five biggest Morgan Freeman sellout movie roles of his career.

1. Hard Rain

The 1998 film, Hard Rain, was all around flop.  Famed film critic, the late Roger Ebert, gave the film just one star, and many other critics echoed his sentiments.  Freeman’s character in the film, Jim, did not connect well with many viewers.  The film was different from much of freeman’s other work, and many fans wondered what made him take the role in the first place.

2. The Big Bounce

Similar to Hard Rain, The Big Bounce was lacking in almost every area possible.  In fact, there’s probably a lot of people who forgot the film even exists – and that’s probably not such a bad thing.

3. Conan the Barbarian

It’s no secret that Morgan Freeman has a great voice, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be used for everything. The 2011 film, Conan the Barbarian, proved to be unsuccessful at the box office, and although Freeman’s voice was perhaps the only good thing about the movie, it seemed a little out-of-place.  Many believe that Freeman only lent his voice to the film to gain a paycheck.

4. The Love Guru

By the time The Love Guru came out in 2008, Morgan Freeman had already become a parody of himself, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. Although the film had it’s funny moments, Freeman really did not fit in.

5.  Chain Reaction

When Morgan Freeman read the script for the 1996 film, Chain Reaction, he must’ve seen something he liked.  Unfortunately, that just didn’t translate on the screen.  The film received mostly negative reviews, and will down in history as one of Freeman’s worst and strangest roles.
