Emmys 2014 Predictions
The 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards are this upcoming Monday, and any fan of television, celebrities, and/or fashion should be pretty psyched about it. The last few years have helped solidify television roles as equally, if not more, coveted than any parts on the big screen. Television has never been so thrilling for actors and actresses to act on and for us viewers to watch.The show will honor the best of the best in the TV industry. Seth Meyers, a prestigious SNL alum and new host of NBC’s “Late Night,” and will host the show.
It’s impossible to know exactly what to expect as far as winners due to the incredibly high caliber of many of the nominated shows and performances. HBO’s mystery anthology, True Detective, will be going up against the final season of Breaking Bad for the best drama series crown. And Netflix’s critically beloved women’s prison show, Orange Is the New Black, might be the series that finally takes down ABC’s Modern Family. Family has won the best comedy series category for the past four years.

We’re calling a repeat winner for Hale, who picked up the award last year as the vice president’s wacky assistant. This is considered Tony’s category to lose, as he had another hilarious performance on “Veep” this season. He also had one of the funniest moments of the ceremony last year, when he helped Julia Louis-Dreyfus accept her award by playing a version of his character and holding her purse.

Voters love Janney (she already won this year for guest actress in a drama for “Masters of Sex”). We wouldn’t put it past them to honor her again, as “Mom” is one of the most underrated comedies on television. But we would love, love it if Bialik won. Her deadpan, sexually frustrated Amy Farrah Fowler is just hilarious.

The final season of Jesse Pinkman and “Breaking Bad” just cannot be denied. Aaron’s performance over the entirety of the series was jaw-droppingly awesome, making Jesse simultaneously sympathetic, pathetic, and forceful. Voters should culminate his part in the series with a win for this final go ’round.

The final season of “Bad” was finally the season that Skyler truly realized what a monster her husband was, allowing Gunn to express equal parts terror, heartbreak, anger, devastation, and strength. Hers was an unforgettable performance that deserves this stature.

Truthfully, it feels like “Breaking Bad” ended years ago, but Cranston was plain unforgettable as Walter White and his performance is a master class in award-winning acting. McConaughey could stealthily steal the prize but Cranston deserves this award on his mantle as much as any man ever has.

“The Good Wife” had an epic Season five, with Margulies leading the charge. Most consider her performance this past season as flawless and multi-layered. She wasn’t even nominated last year so Emmy voters may try to right that wrong with a category win this year. It was considered both the best season yet of “The Good Wife” and Julianna’s best work to date.

Even though Louis C.K. should win (no one works harder, plus he pulled in a record number of Emmy noms last year and has yet to win), but Parsons will most likely win. With three trophies in this category for Jim, Emmy voters clearly have a favorite. And he is just excellent in the role, apparently $90 million worth of excellent. There is no Big Bang (one of the Best. Comedies. Ever.) without Parsons and his perfect comedic timing.

This is a tough one, but we’re going to give the slight edge to Schilling based purely on the show’s hip factor and the brazen buzz and love for the Netflix show. If Taylor loses, she’ll lose to Louis-Dreyfus, but the “Veep” star has won two years in a row. And OITNB is the trendiest and freshest thing to happen to TV in a long, long time, led my Schilling’s strong performance. But watch Louis-Dreyfus win again.

The show based on the classic Coen brothers movie tested the boundaries of television this year and starred the amazing Billy Bob Thorton. The entertaining show featured brilliant cinematography, acting, and writing. Even though we are on team “American Horror Story”!

Anyone with a heart who saw this movie was touched to the core. The HBO film had a gripping story and unforgettable performances. It’s also tough to escape the award-winning grip of Ryan Murphy. His directorial effort, based on the 1985 play about the AIDS crisis in New York, got rave reviews and deeply moved viewers.

The Netflix favorite is likely to end “Modern Family’s” four-year winning streak. Despite the fact that OITNB isn’t exactly hilarious, it is a stellar show with an five-star ensemble cast, gripping stories, and enough laughs to balance out the show’s heavy dramatic moments. It should win whatever category it is in, it is that good, even though comedy series seems a bit of a stretch. But “Big Bang” might definitely win. It is fantastic in every way.

The major question of the Emmys is will the last season of “Breaking Bad” or the first season of “True Detective” dominate in the night’s most celebrated category? “True Detective” made waves, but we found it to be convoluted and full of mumbles. Nothing, again, nothing, was better than “Breaking Bad” the series as a whole, so its stellar final season should be honored with this win.
