Five Things You Didn’t Know about Quentin Tarantino

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Press Room

I happen to think Quentin Tarantino is one of the great directors of our time. Yes, his films are often violent. Yes, his films are often vulgar. Yes, his films often show us aspects of life we would maybe would prefer not knowing about. But the fact of the matter is, you can wade through all those points and there is one that most critics will agree on: the man is a genius. Though we may know some facts about his films, how much do you really know about the man himself? Here are five things you didn’t know about Quentin Tarantino.

The Famous Pulp Fiction Wallet Was Really His

You know the Wallet from Pulp Fiction I am talking about. Had a very particular saying on it that I shall not type out here. Well, that wallet (which I now happen to own as well) was actually Quentin Tarantino’s real wallet at the time. It is a line that is a nod to blaxploitation films of that era, which have hugely influenced his body of work.

He Is Not A Fan of His Dad (and How His Dad Leeches Off His Name)

56th GRAMMY Awards - Red Carpet

Quentin Tarantino has said many times he does not consider his relationship with his Father to be very good. He claims he was pretty much an absentee dad. Which makes it even more ironic that his Dad, Tony Tarantino, now tries to name drop his son’s name as is looking to get into films.

He Is The Product Of a Teen Mom

Yes, it’s true. Quentin Tarantino’s mother, Connie, was sixteen years old when she gave birth to him. So right away we see that he did not like his Dad, and that his Mom was a kid when she had him. He turned out pretty good. But let’s be honest, everyone’s home life is broken in some way or another. He is no different than a good deal of people who come from imperfect parents.

He Passed On Directing Some “Classics”

Being a big time director, many people forget that movie companies and writers go to him and ask him to direct their mainstream, blockbuster movies. One such film was a movie you might remember called Speed. Can you imagine how hectic and profanity laden his version would have been? My God, that would have been magical.

He Couldn’t Care Less If You Hate Him

I think what makes Quentin Tarantino such an enigmatic and brilliant soul is that he lets his work speak for itself. He is not trying to win admirers or friends. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t care what you think. It may come across as aloof or smug, but guess what? When you are producing the level of quality this guy is, you can afford to be a little smug. He’s kind of earned it, don’t you think?

So love him or hate him (and make no mistakes, it is always one or the other), he is who he is and wont change that for anyone. He also makes some of the most fast paced and memorable films of the last two decades. He may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but you gotta admit: there is nothing else quite like him out there today.
