Gemma’s Early Years

Jemma was born on November 29, 1982. Her father grew up in Hong Kong, where he worked as an engineer. Her mother grew up in mainland China, and she was a pharmacist at the same hospital where Gemma was born, Guy’s Hospital in London, England. She also has a younger sister named Helen, who looks a lot like her. Helen works as an associate director at the financial public relations firm, Buchanan. In April 2016, Gemma was the maid of honor in her sister’s wedding to English businessman, Eric Born. She was raised in South East England, and when she was growing up, she attended an all-girls school in Orpington.

Gemma’s Education

After Gemma graduated from the Newstead Wood School for Girls, she went on to study law at Worcester College in Oxford. After she graduated, she gained a training contract offer from the law firm Slaughter and May. It was then that she decided that practicing law was not her true passion, and she decided to attend the Drama Centre London, where she studied acting. She was discovered when a British film producer named Damian Jones saw her showcase. Soon after, she signed on with acting agent Nicki van Gelder.

Gemma’s Modeling Career

In 2006, Gemma was one of the models on the first season of Project Catwalk, which is the UK version of the American show, Project Runway. She decided to take on as many modeling jobs as possible so that she could fund her training in drama school. One of her most famous jobs had her photographed by Rankin for the Nivea Visage campaign. Just three years after appearing on Project Catwalk, Gemma started getting roles on television. In 2009, she starred as Mia in BBC’s production of Doctor Who. Soon after, she took on a variety of roles on shows such as The IT Crowd, Sherlock, Fresh Meat, True Love, Death in Paradise, Dates, and The Game. In 2015, she landed the role of Anita/Mia, a leading role in Humans.

She Has Had a Successful Career in Film

When she wasn’t working on her various television shows, she was also acting in films. Some of her roles included Molly on When Evil Calls in 2006, Bo in Pimp in 2010, Kim-Lin in Submarine, Amy Chang in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and Chen-Lin in Belle’s Families. She also has two films that are currently in post-production.

She Has Acted on Stage

According to Gemma, television and theater wasn’t enough, so she decided to try her luck in the theater. She made a great choice, as she appeared in 6 theater productions, including Turandot, The Sugar Coated Bullets of the Bourgeoisie, Yellow Face, Our Ajax, Yellow Face in the UK, and The Homecoming. She earned rave reviews for each and every role.

The Love of Her Life

Gemma met the love of her life Jack Whitehall when they were working on Fresh Meat together. They have been dating since 2011. According to Gemma, they went to a restaurant called Nando’s on their first date and they split the bill. Gemma’s boyfriend is a very crude, but funny guy. During his stand-up shows, he talks about Gemma a lot. After he made a few jokes about her that she didn’t like, she laid down the law. She told him that if he is going to make jokes about him during one of his sets, she would review them and make a decision on a case by case basis. She Has Plenty of Talents

Gemma is more than just an actress. She has a few other talents. When she was younger, she was a competitive swimmer at the national level. She also took ballet classes, where she excelled. She is also a classically trained pianist and violinist. While she was in school, she earned a diploma for her violin playing. It was called the Diploma of Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, and according to Gemma, it was one of her greatest achievements.

She Witnessed a Murder

In October 2012, Gemma went through one of the most traumatic experiences of her life. She was standing outside the Putney Bridge Tube Station in West London. While she was standing there minding her own business, she witnessed a man stab a homeless man. The murder happened right in front of her. After the man, Frederic Russell stabbed the man, their eyes locked for a moment. After the suspect took off, her returned for a brief moment and saw Gemma tending to his victim.

When the suspect took off, Gemma stayed with the man and she called an ambulance. Unfortunately, the man didn’t make it. In 2013, the man was tried for murder and she was called as a witness at the trial, where the suspect was deemed unfit to appear in court. The jury had to determine whether Russell killed the homeless man, and Gemma helped them find him guilty. Gemma says that it was one of the worst experiences of her life.
