Robert Downey Jr. Net Worth

Robert Downey Jr. is an actor with an approximate net worth of $140 million. Downey is currently listed at the top of Forbes Magazine’s annual list of Hollywood’s Highest Paid Actors. He earned more than $80 million from summer 2014 to summer 2015, making him the highest paid actor in the business. Born on April 4, 1965 in New York to an actor by the name of Robert Downey Sr. and an actress by the name of Elsie, Downey Jr. began acting as a child. His faster was a writer, actor, producer and the director of a number of films that never made it big, and his mother was an actress who was portrayed in many of those roles. Thanks to his parents’ Hollywood lifestyle, Robert Downey Jr. was exposed to a lifestyle that most children are not exposed to, and he began his drug addiction at the tender age of 6, which is something he frequently discusses.

After dropping out of high school to pursue his own acting career back in 1982, Downey Jr. was able to secure roles in movies such as Tuff Turf, which also starred James Spader. The Pick Up Artist was Downey’s first leading role in 1987, in which he starred alongside the very popular Molly Ringwald. The 80s brought him a number of roles big enough to cause him some fame and recognition, but it also brought with it a number of problems for the actor. However, he was able to keep his problems relatively quiet at the time, becoming excessively famous in 1992 when he starred in Chaplin. The role earned him an Oscar nomination, and the honor of being cast in nine more major films throughout the rest of the decade. As the decade came to a close, Robert Downey Jr.’s personal problems began to affect his job. He was arrested on numerous occasions, he was sent to rehab several times and he was continuously abusing substances that are dangerous to his mind, his behavior and his body. He had a few guest spots on television during the five years in which he was so strung out on drugs and alcohol that he nearly cost himself his career.

It was not until 2001 that he was able to get himself clean and revamp his career. He did several movies in that time, none of which were particularly notable. Fortunately, Downey was able to remain sober during this time, and he finally hit the jackpot in 2008 when he was tapped to play lead the role in Iron Man. Followed by lead roles in Sherlock Holmes, The Avengers, and Tropic Thunder, Downey was able to rebuild his career bigger and better than ever. Since 2008, he’s starred in more than 6 films with more than a half billion dollars in box office earnings. Iron Man 3 and The Avengers both earned more than $1 billion.

It’s been since 2008 that Robert Downey Jr. has really built his net worth. He is currently earning a reported $40 million for his role in Captain America: Civil War, and that will likely put him back at the top of the list of highest paid actors for a fourth year in a row. Avengers: Age of Ultron has earned $1.4 billion in theaters, and that’s where the bulk of the $80 million he earned in the past year came from. Since he has very few outside businesses to his name, he doesn’t earn much anywhere else; though he and his wife have started their own business and are hoping to do something with it in the near future.
