Tim Duncan Net Worth
Tim Duncan is a professional basketball player with a net worth of approximately $130 million. Born on April 25, 1976 to a midwife and a mason in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Tim Duncan knew from a very early age that he would play sports. However, he always thought he would be an Olympic swimmer, like his sister. He was a standout swimmer as a teenager and excelled in a number of swimming events. However, his career was derailed in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo ripped through the islands and destroyed the only Olympic-size swimming pool around. With no other choice than to swim in the ocean, he gave up his dreams due to a fear of sharks and being attacked. At that point, the young man was a bit lost and unsure what he would do with his life.
Shortly after his loss of swimming, Tim Duncan’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and died. It was the day before he turned 14, and his world ended. However, she was very adamant on her death bed that she wanted him, as well as his two older sisters, to go to college and graduate with a degree, making them promise her that they would do that. He decide to take her memory and honor it by doing what she asked, and that is the reason that Duncan refused to leave college early for the NBA draft. He was a very tall child, and he thought he might be good at basketball. However, he found it quite difficult changing his life from swimming to the court, and he wasn’t sure he could handle it. He played to ease his stress and his anger at his mother’s death.
Regardless, he decided to keep trying, practicing day after day so that he made the St. Dunstan Episcopal High School basketball team, where he was a standout. It did not take long for universities all over the United States to take notice of him when he was playing, especially since he was so young and had only began playing the game the same year he made the team. The coach from Wake Forest, Dave Odom, was particularly interested and made a trip to visit the basketball star. He made his decision at that point to attend Wake Forest.
Despite a rough start in college, he was considered one of the leading prospects for the NBA draft following his sophomore year in college. However, he opted to maintain his position with Wake Forest, obtaining his degree for his mother. He entered the NBA draft in 1997 and was selected by the San Antonio Spurs, where he has played ever since. He became captain of the team in 2003 and he has not led his team down since. His career has been an impressive one, and most of his net worth has come from the Spurs, though he also has some endorsements across the country for some major brands. He’s doing well, and has so far not made any indication that he is looking to retire, as some have already done despite being a bit younger than he.
