There are very few things in life that are more difficult than being a teenager.  For nearly a decade, we all must learn to navigate the world in awkward bodies that have not yet caught up with the rest of us.  While some people manage to handle their teenage years with incredible grace, most are not so lucky. However, for many people, entering adulthood marks the end of a rough patch, and a chance to reinvent themselves. Even some of the world’s most popular celebrities have gone through some very awkward phases, and in many cases they have come out on top.  Because no ugly duckling will be ugly forever; here are 10 beautiful celebrities who were awkward looking teens.

10. Matthew Lewis

Matthew Lewis is best-known for portraying Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter film series.  Most easily remembered as an awkward looking chubby kid, Lewis has since grown into a very handsome young man.

9. Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood; however, that has not always been the case. Before becoming a celebrity, Garner was an awkward looking young lady whose choice in clothing was everything but fashionable.  Fortunately for Garner, she has since moved on to bigger and better things.

8. Zooey Deschanel

Actress/singer Zooey Deschanel is often complimented on her good looks.  However, there was once a time when her looks garnered more negative comments than positive.  During an interview, Deschanel, who described herself as chubby, said that she was often mocked and bullied by her peers.  Deschanel also shared an experience in which one of her peers spit on her.  Deschanel stated:“I really don’t know why she spit at me. I just talked to her. I guess I wasn’t allowed to talk to her. I remember I couldn’t believe it.”

There’s no denying that Olivia Munn is beautiful.  Over the course of her career, she has received several accolades due to her good looks, including landing the cover of Playboy Magazine.  With so much attention focused on her looks, it may be difficult to believe that Munn was once the kind of person you could have walked passed without even noticing.

6. Naya Rivera

Naya Rivera, a regular on Maxim Magazine’s Hot List, was not always the stunning beauty she is now.  In fact, Rivera has admitted that she was a skinny and slightly award teenager who didn’t have many friends in high school. During an interview, Rivera recalled her senior prom, stating: “He started talking about how skinny I was! All of his friends were like, ‘You need a thick girl.’ He was grinding on every other girl at the dance while I sat alone at the table, looking like a señorita. I didn’t even dance. It was horrible.” It’s probably safe to say that her date regrets the day he ruined Naya Rivera’s prom.

Reality TV star and basketball wife, LaLa Anthony has had a very impressive career.  Anthony, then known as LaLa Vazquez, rose to fame during the early 2000s for her work as an MTV VJ.  Over the years, Anthony has worked hard to establish herself as a serious business woman, and she is now the star of her own reality TV show.  However, things weren’t always so great in LaLa land.  Before making it big, Anthony was an awkward looking teen who showed no signs of making her living in front of the camera.

George Clooney is one of the very lucky people who seems to only be getting better with age. For years before his marriage, Clooney was considered the most eligible bachelor in Hollywood. Admired for his undeniable combination of good looks and charm, many of Clooney’s fans were in awe of his good looks. Although it may seem like Clooney has been handsome forever, that is simply not the case.  Like most people, Clooney went through a phase of unattractive awkwardness, except his included a bowl haircut and unflagging glasses. Kerry Washington has taken TV by storm with her portrayal of the smart and unstoppable Olivia Pope.  Unfortunately for Washington, she wasn’t headed down the path to become a sex symbol. During her younger years, Washington was not considered one of the ‘pretty girls,’ and as a result she often viewed herself as ugly.  During an interview, Washington stated: “I didn’t grow up thinking I was pretty; there was always prettier girls than me.”
