Dallas Cowboys Sign Michael Sam after Rams Release Him
The NFL’s first openly gay player has been cut from one team and picked up by another all in the course of a few days. Michael Sam is now officially a Dallas Cowboy. The Texas native couldn’t be happier with the franchise’s decision to sign him, having grown up watching the team play. Sam decided to come out as a gay man even though many people told him not to, and it seems it’s all the college football star has been associated with lately.
Fortunately, Coach Jason Garrett of the Cowboy isn’t focused on anything other than Sam’s ability on the field. “We just want to give him a chance to come in and help our football team. That’s where our attention is. What people say outside the organization is up to them,” he told the press after the Cowboys announced they’d drafted the former Missouri player.
“As a young man growing up in Texas I have always love the Dallas Cowboy, so to be able to join this incredible organization is really a dream come true. I want to thank the Jones family and the entire Cowboys organization for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to putting my helmet and pads on every day to work my hardest to help bring a sixth Super Bowl Championship to Dallas,” Sam said in a statement to the press.
With a number of offseason injuries to contend with, the Cowboys’ pass rush is in need of some assistance. The St. Louis Rams cut Sam only four days before the Cowboys picked him up, and it’s something that the team is happy about. They are going to use him to help bring together some soft spots on the team, even though they weren’t originally looking for a player of his caliber during the draft.
