Derek Jeter Wins his Last Game with the Yankees
Sunday was a momentous occasion for the New York Yankees, their fans and their long-time short stop, Derek Jeter. The 20-year veteran player played his last game as a pro baseball player, and he won the game. The ball from the game was marked and numbered to commemorate the occasion. The ball was hit by Jeter, and it marked his 3,465 hit as a pro ball player. It went down the third-base line and bounced off the hand of the player who was only 4-years-old when Jeter played his first major league game.
This hit was also the 1,311 RBI of Jeter’s career. It was his last hit as a player, a successful one, and it was a win for the Yankees. It was then that the dugout full of his teammates and friends hugged him and celebrated his last game. The season is over, and the Yankee’s are, for the first time in 20 years, without Derek Jeter.
“In an era where few heroes exist, over a 20-year span he represented the sport and himself in an absolutely magnificent way. It’s almost hard to believe. He makes one proud,” is what commissioner Bud Selig had to say when he stopped by Fenway Park – home of the last game of Jeter’s career – to say goodbye to the player himself.
New York Yankees fans filled Fenway Park – which is a pretty funny sight to see – this weekend to watch the superstar athlete play his final game. Tickets sold like crazy, some for prices you wouldn’t even believe, and it was an emotional night as the player played the last few minutes of his last game.
It was one of the most monumental games in baseball history. Not many people can boast the kind of career that Jeter can boast, and no one in baseball has made as much of an impact as the 40-year-old player.
