Madonna Appears for Jury Duty

Jury duty is not about as exciting as a root canal, but we all have to do it at some point, even if your name is Madonna. The Material Girl did her civic duty this week, appearing at a Manhattan courthouse after receiving a summons for jury duty – and she didn’t even try to get out of it ahead of time. The superstar posted a photo of a doorknob with the New York County Courthouse logo on it and captioned the photo, “Serving my country! Reporting to jury selection! #itshotinhere”.

Fortunately for Madonna, well, she’s Madonna; and everyone knew it. The superstar was taken immediately to the clerk’s office where she was dismissed and on her way home less than two hours after she arrived. Before any rumors could begin that Madonna was given the star treatment (pun intended) the spokesperson for the court made a statement to the effect that she wasn’t given star treatment. She was sent home because there were more than enough potential jurors present and that having a major celebrity at the courthouse is cause for additional security and chaos the court simply does not need.

“The greater good here is that her appearance really goes to show that everyone gets called. The intent here was not to create a distraction to other jurors or the business of the court,” is the statement provided by David Bosskstaver. This dismissal comes less than a year after actor Tom Hanks showed up for jury duty in Los Angeles and his presence caused so much commotion that the criminal being tried was able to plea to smaller charges because attorneys in the case approached Hanks during lunch.

She didn’t have to spend the entire day waiting around for her name to be called, and she’s not going to have to do it again for a long time. Madonna is officially exempt from jury duty again until 2020.
