Ten Celebrities Who Divorced Their Parents
It isn’t rare to hear about young celebrities in Hollywood seeking emancipation from their parents. A couple of stars do it to cement their independence and handle their finances on their own. While some do it for purely practical reasons since child labor laws get in the way of their work schedule. It’s a risky move that might not sit well with most fans, but the gamble pays well if the stars play their cards right.

Courtney Love
Love was emancipated from her own parents when she was only a teenager. The reason behind the move was unspecified, but perhaps Love did it to be more independent and free-spirited to suit her rock and roll lifestyle. Interestingly, her daughter Frances Bean Cobain followed in her mother’s footsteps and emancipated herself too in 2010. We’ll see if this happens again in the next generation of the family.

Jamie Pressly
The My Name is Earl star seems serious about her modeling career even when she was only 15 years old. She won an emancipation from her parents in order to take a modeling job in Japan. She might not be a model now, but it seems like she made the right decisions to stardom. Pressly is now a successful actress with a slew of projects under her belt in both the television and film industry.

Jenna Malone
Malone is known to many as Johanna Mason in the Hunger Games films. However, she rose to fame at an early age with her role in the film Stepmom with Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon. She sought emancipation from her mother when she was only 15 years old. She once told People Magazine that she did this because she believed that her mother managed her finances during that period of time.

Juliette Lewis
This famed rock star and actress sought her independence and won emancipation from her parents at the age of 14. Lewis cited bypassing US child employment laws behind her decision. It seemed to work out in her favor since she managed to get a head start in her career by starring in pretty awesome films She might not have been able to star in projects like My Stepmother is an Alien and The Wonder Years without it.

Macaulay Culkin
Fans who grew up with Culkin as he rose to fame are well-aware of the custody battle and financial dispute in his family. The star decided to pursue legal action because of this and sought to emancipate himself. Reports say that Culkin is estranged from his father since 1997. There might not be much to fight over anymore since Culkin doesn’t appear in much projects as he used to during his prime.

Michelle Williams
People know Williams when she was still a young lady starring in the hit television show Dawson’s Creek. She is also one of the stars who sought emancipation from her parents to bypass child labor laws. While she’s definitely a successful actress in critical and commercial aspects, she once said in an interview that emancipating herself was stupid and did not realize the amount of responsibility she was taking on.

Drew Barrymore
Barrymore was a Hollywood icon since she was only a young child. Many first remember her from her role in Steven Spielberg’s film E.T. At age 15, she petitioned to be emancipated from her parents in order to bypass child labor laws. When asked about this, she mentioned in an interview that the laws restricted her work hours and that was a big consideration when people cast celebrities in films.

Aaron Carter
Carter is a star on his own and pursued a career in the music industry like his older brother Nick Carter with the Backstreet Boys. Working with his family didn’t work out too well for him as he became more famous. He once accused his mother of squandering his hard earned money and fired her as his manager. Afterwards, the young singer sought legal emancipation from his parents.

Alicia Silverstone
We might not have seen Silverstone in the film The Crush or others that came out when she was a minor if she had not emancipated herself. She sought to seek her independence legally and to bypass child laws when she was only 15 years old. The primary reason was so that she could legally work the hours required for her starring role and film debut in the 90’s film The Crush with Cary Elwes.

Corey Feldman
Feldman was a huge child star back in the day and it came with a couple of headaches. He emancipated from his parents when he was only 15 years old. He discovered that he only had $40,000 left of the $1 million he earned from his projects. The sad part was that his father even wanted the $40,000 left in the bank account. This no doubt solidified Feldman’s decision to break free from his family.
