‘The Giver’ Movie will be at least Partially Black and White
The movie adaptation of Lois Lowry‘s beloved young adult novel, The Giver, will have at least one scene shown in black and white. The original movie trailer displayed full color scenes, resulting in many fans of the novel criticizing that this is too different from the book. Lowry set her novel in a future world where the human race is so dulled that they can no longer see color or experience emotions.
It is when the main character begins to “receive” the memories from “the giver” (played by the fabulous Jeff Bridges) that he begins to experience life in color, which is something no one else in society can experience. Whether the scenes are shown in color or black and white is actually very important to the dystopian storyline.
A new featurette was released Friday on Yahoo, confirming that The Giver will indeed have segments in black and white. The clip reveals a black-and-white scene featuring Bridges’ titular character informing Brenton Thwaites’ Jonas that “There is no way for me to prepare you for what I’m going to do now.” Color us intrigued!
Another controversy related to the adaptation? The lead character, who turns 12 years old at the beginning of the novel, is played by 24-year old Thwaites, an Australian actor.
The movie is filled with stars, including Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård and Taylor Swift, acting in one of her first movie roles (she was in the ensemble rom-com Valentine’s Day and also voiced a character in The Lorax). Lowry, whose book won the 1994 Newberry Medal, was a a co-screenwriter.
The Giver hits theaters on August 15th.
